10 Things I Assume You Know About Me if You Read My Journal

Completely revised and up to date as of October 2016

Abstract. I am a (1) 33-year-old (2) USan (3) expatriate living in Finland because (4) my wife is [personal profile] waxjism who is a Finnish citizen. I am also a second-generation science fiction fan, a (5) voracious multifannish reader, writer and reccer with (6) 2 cats (Arwen & Russel Crowe) & 2 bunnies (Rowan & Japp), (7) socialist/green liberal politics, (8) social anxieties and other neuroses, and (9) a secular Jewish heritage which is important to me even though I'm an atheist. Also (10) my dad is quadriplegic and in a wheelchair due to a car accident when I was in college. EXTRA BONUS INFO: I like [journalfen.net profile] fandom_wank, so if you hate that shit you can DEFRIEND ME NOW (TM [livejournal.com profile] snacky).

  1. I was born in 1982 (Dec. 9).
I attended Amherst College for a year and a half before my dad's accident in 2003 interfered. On moving to Finland in 2004 I entered the master's program in sociology at Åbo Akademi, and I studied there in Swedish three years (until 2007). Then I had a career-path crisis and dropped out without writing any theses (I do like sociology though) and worked as a freelance translator of Swedish/Norwegian to English ~2 years before taking a teacher's assistant course. I've recently finished 2 years of intensive Finnish classes (because it's quite useful for living and finding work in Finland).

  2. I'm an American from the South.
I grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, otherwise known as the Heart (or, if you're my Dad, the pancreas) of Dixie. This is the deep south and the college football capital of the country. Alabama sits between Georgia and Mississippi, with a short length on the Gulf of Mexico and a slight border with Florida to the south (Tennessee is to the north). It's a socially conservative, highly religious, poor and rural state, still generally undereducated and underperforming most of the country except in the area of spending on highway maintenance. I am not a proper Southerner, do not speak with an accent, and was transplanted there at the age of 7. My mother is midwestern and my Dad is of NYC immigrant stock and grew up in Virginia where his parents were university professors.

  3. I live in Finland!
Finland is between Sweden and Russia. Even though I live on the southern coast right on the Baltic Sea, it's near the arctic circle. In the winter, the sun only rises for about four hours each day. In the middle of summer, the sky never gets completely dark. It's very cold.

  4. I'm bisexual in a lesbian relationship.
Pursuant to #3,  my wife, [personal profile] waxjism, is a Finn of the Swedish-speaking minority (so, you know, I also speak Swedish). She is the reason I live in Finland. She does her own fandomy things and sometimes our fandoms overlap. We met in Lord of the Rings fandom in 2002. I moved up here in August 2004. We were married in Iowa in October 2009. She has two brothers, and the eldest has 4 kids: Carmela, who is approaching teenagerness alarmingly rapidly, and the noobs, who just started school. The noobs are triplets, often called Le & Lo (the male ones) and Little C (the female one). Other Brother also has 2 offspring, the youngest in the clan, Sofia and Oona.

  5. I read in a variety of fandoms and maintain a recs site which attests to that fact (currently my reading habits and recs can be tracked at http://www.pinboard.in/u:cimness, and from my AO3 profile for AO3-hosted works - I haven't really got a unified solution there yet) (Also write, but in fewer fandoms.)
I entered slash fandom with popslash in 2001 and have since read in a wide variety of fandoms. I've written in a few as well, most notably Star Trek:TOS, LOTR/LOTR RPS, bandom (MCR), Sherlock Holmes (Granada/lit), and Prince of Tennis, but I read multifannishly and tend not to immerse myself fully in a fandom. I sometimes suspect I will be remembered best for writing gay fish sex about Finding Nemo, though. I have many OTPs in the sense that I can't split them up, but my ultimate OTP is TOS Kirk/Spock (although I read Kirk/McCoy Reboot fic, so I guess the OTP is unusually breakable). Over time my favorites for reading have included Due South (Fraser/Kowalski), SGA, various RPS, and Highlander. More recently I have read (and reread) hockey rpf, Teen Wolf (Derek/Stiles), The Hobbit (everything except uncle/nephew), MCU (Steve/Sam), Hannibal, Red Dwarf, Voyager, and literally any rereading I come across because I'm not really into any currently large, productive fandoms.

  6. Besides [personal profile] waxjism, I live with 2 cats and 2 bunnies.
Our cats Arwen (better known as the BB) and Russel Crowe (better known as Snookums or Butthead, but that IS the name that he came with) are Cornish rexes - highly social and talkative, and known for their very fine, short, curly fur.

Our bunnies are teddy dwarfs, a breed of dwarf angora rabbit popular in Europe. They were born October 1 2015 and bred by our buddy [personal profile] pierydys. My photoblog dedicated mostly to the pets is on Tumblr at [tumblr.com profile] teaandmisanthropy.

  7. I'm politically liberal.
My parents are die-hard Democrats; I remember campaigning on streetcorners for Dukakis with my mother in the 1988 presidential elections, and some of my earliest memories are of chanting and marching in protest marches with my parents as a toddler, when my mother was the president of the New Orleans chapter of NOW (the National Organization for Women). I'm very glad to be in northern Europe and not the US these days (although also just in general, really). (My dad always calls croutons "salad Republicans", aka cretins, which should tell you something else about my family.) In Finland I vote Green.

  8. I suffer from anxiety and depression and underdeveloped social skills.
I'm an introvert and often anxious in social situations, so I dislike big crowds, long amounts of time spent in public (like, a whole day), or meeting new people. My anxiety isn't super-severe like panic-attack inducing (I take Xanax/Alprazolam on an as-needed basis for my anxiety attacks, which my first psychologist hilariously told me were 'Not anxiety attacks, they're just attacks of acute anxiety', a quote that will live forever in my store of dinner table anecdotes). It does get in the way a lot, though, like with my periodic monumental avoidance of all types of social interaction from email and comments to trips to the grocery store. I post about this from time to time with the tag "my personal neuroses".

  9. I'm [pick one: sort of, half, slightly] a Jew.
I identify to a certain degree with my Jewish heritage, which I am in practicality somewhat estranged from due to my family's being isolated from religious practice and cultural community for several generations.

Or, if you care for more detail, my dad is a Jew, but both of his parents were raised Atheist in ethnically diverse communities of NYC. My paternal grandmother had a strong sense of loss about the cut ties to her heritage, so she instituted God-free home celebrations of Channukah, Passover, and Purim when my dad was a kid. These were based on library research and liberally incorporated civil influences (her Passover seder includes Pete Seeger and Martin Luther King Jr, but no prayers). I was raised on my grandmother's holidays and a stack of informative children's books about my heritage, but isolated from any Jewish community and any concrete experience of Jewish identity. Although struggling with that part of my identity is not unproblematic, it's always been very important to me.

  10. My father has been quadriplegic since a car accident in 2003. He is in a wheelchair.
In the accident he suffered a spinal cord injury relatively high on the spine, C6/C7. He isn't a complete quadriplegic; he has no feeling below the upper chest, but he does have partial use of his arms. He was in rehabilitation the summer of 2003. My dad and I have always been extremely close, and his injury hit me hard at an already-vulnerable time. I'm a homebody, and for many years he was my closest friend. He's fine now, and works full-time again. He is a paleontologist and is also involved in sff fandom.

  11. EXTRA SPECIAL BONUS INFO! [Expanded as needed]
    • I dig Fandom Wank. I haven't been a regular for years, but I'm definitely behind it in principle, so in the immortal words of [livejournal.com profile] snacky: if that bothers you, DEFRIEND ME NOW (or feel free to, anyway - but don't whine to me seek to engage me in debate about it, because it's really old news).

    • I believe in the scientific process and subscribe to a supernatural-free and secular humanist worldview. Briefly, I am an atheist, but this also means that I am a non-believer in, in no particular order: organized religion, unorganized religion, superstitions, belief in aliens, belief in ghosts, astrology, tarot and other claims to psychic powers, and improbable conspiracy theories of any stamp. I was raised Unitarian Universalist.

    • For the most part, the only information I will post access-locked has to do with school or work activities which I wish to keep out of search engines. If you are a fandom person as opposed to a spam bot, and I've seen you around or exchanged a few words with you or we have acquaintances in common or for some other reason you wish to have access to my locked posts which may be largely rants, feel free to drop me a note or message to that effect.

I like knowing these things about you. I used to follow [livejournal.com profile] wax_jism a little as an author and I remember her talking about her girlfriend a few years ago, long before I was anywhere near LJ. It's nice to connect dots.

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
i used to call her my girlfriend too, but i switched to "better half" after i discovered pg wodehouse and fell in love with the phrase!

[identity profile] norah.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
One of Himself's friends calls him my "fatter half," which I find hilarious. Probably not a good term in a relationship with two wimmins, but he is a Boy and these things roll like water off his back.

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA. wax probably wouldn't mind! she's certainly fatter. that is inarguable!

[identity profile] norah.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Everyone is fatter than you.

Hey, if my husband weighs, like, 195, and I weigh 150, does that make me, like, his better 43%?

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
skldjöfask! your ICON! it's mickey and his little boyfriend! ♥♥♥♥♥♥

does that make me, like, his better 43%?

and also, i like how you think.

[identity profile] norah.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Mickey/Jake is my Doctor Who OTP for Ten thus far. For Nine, of course, I had an OT4....

There is a [livejournal.com profile] mickeyfic community, but it contains (natch) much of dubious quality. And yet, I read in hope.

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
oh yeah, they are definitely an otp. not surprised there's no good fic, though - but there's oh so much possibility!

[identity profile] hollsh.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The LOTR fandom brought many people together...:)

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
i know! that's my favourite fandom of the past for that reason. imagine what my life would be if i didn't know you OR wax!

[identity profile] hollsh.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! That would be so sad!

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
i'd be a completely different and much more boring person! what is life without the occasional accidental cricket/yogurt fire?

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
an excellent point!

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
and the ghetto tea party! just think, if there had never been a ghetto tea party. or that little incident with the bovine flu and the hole in the car.

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
who could forget? want to forget, maybe. actually forget, no.

[identity profile] hollsh.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahahaha!!

Psy: ...it will haunt me til I die...or longer. Probably longer.

[identity profile] maximilianarmor.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
was that when you guys built the Dumbass Cage, or what?

[identity profile] hollsh.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Psy: No...that came a couple years later...

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
and when it did, it was long overdue.

[identity profile] perhael.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I pride myself on having known all these things before reading this post, minus a few details perhaps. Although sometimes I actually *forget* you're an American, despite having known you for some time before you moved to Finland.

I'm thinking I might just have to do one of these posts myself. Mostly because I love talking about myself, hehe. ;) <3

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
you know more about me than a lot of my friends do, though - i guess you talk about different things with different people and you and i tend to have more serious talks about Life and that kind of middle-of-the-night thing. :)

i try to make people forget i'm american, too, so that's all right. i've even got to the point where hearing other american accents in public squicks me!

[identity profile] perhael.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I bring out the Serious Talk in people ;)

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
maybe you should become a shrink.

;)

[identity profile] perhael.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahahaha, no. That would be like, the blind leading the blind. Into a REALLY DEEP RAVINE. :p

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
you said it, not me!

*snicker*

[identity profile] elfiepike.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
i think i've picked up on most--all?--of these over time, but it's interesting to have them laid out like this.

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2006-07-10 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
:D you've been around for a lot of it!

[identity profile] kmazzy.livejournal.com 2006-07-11 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
ahhh cimmeh. you're so great.

You posted it! I think it's great, a little [livejournal.com profile] cimorene111 synopsis.

Now let me pinch your cheeks.

was it cute? oh no! i was trying so hard to be logical and serious and adult!

I am also bisexual in a lesbian relationship, and I also met my girlfriend through fandom - she is [personal profile] bowdlerized. She was born the same year as you, but I am quite a lot older.

And btw I also know another American-born educator of young kids in Scandanavia, but she lives in the Faroes - she has for more than 30 years. She founded a school there.

Alack I am even older than <user="waxjism">. But I wear sneakers too! The ones in your journal are great. The HDGF wears Tigers all the time. Those and the Keds Eleanor series.
