I can see that it could make sense for it to be more negative for children, who probably don't want to be seen as naughty or bad when that wasn't what they were going for. It maybe gets used as a remonstrance and it's only as you grow older that you get the way it can be said facetiously or jokingly to be read as a positive? And also of course rebelliousness is less to be avoided as you get older.
