an avocado should be firm but give way a bit to the touch--just no specially squishy spots. if it's actually *hard*, or *really* firm, it's not ripe.
(spent like an hour in two grocery stores avocado hunting today--it's hard to get good ripe ones in the off-season. and so i learned more about how to distinguish them.)
