Yeah, it's because they're too old. Since I made them, the style was adapted and added as an official style: http://www.dreamwidth.org/customize/?layoutid=426290&show=all - the sidebar is now opaque, and some of the wallpapers aren't official, but you can change the colors and wallpapers using the style wizard just by making changes to the Color and Images tabs after you apply the style and click 'Customize'.
You can also make the sidebar transparent again by deleting the color for Module Background. Changing the background image is also done in the Images tab - just replace the current images from whichever style you apply with your own. You can change all the colors and all the images, as well as the fonts, so you can really make your own theme. :)
There were some changes made in the officialization process, and since then the entire site style system has had some changes as well when features were changed or added. That's also why the patch doesn't work... I also can't even remember what it looked like in 2009, so... sorry about that, I wouldn't know how to fix it anymore. I can't even figure it out from reading what I wrote in the patch post...
