cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (hurry)

I agree. I just finally watched it all the other day. It wasn't that Kate Beckinsale was a bad actress - I'd rather put it down to bad directing, mostly (Mark Strong and whoever-it-was as Frank were excellent, but Olivia Williams as Jane also suffered from good acting and bad directing, I thought), and then the lack of chemistry - because she sold the character she was making, but the interpretation was troubling. Emma is very self-satisfied, but it's her youth and inexperience that make her so. She is, after all, a very sheltered twenty-one, I believe. It's important to see the coming-of-age aspect of Emma and to preserve her sympathetic qualities throughout.
