Relationships: Patrice Bergeron/Brad Marchand
Characters: Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand, Loui Eriksson, Torey Krug, Daniel Paille
Additional Tags: Boston Bruins, Alternate Universe, Rare Pairings, McMurdo, Antarctica, Nature, Falling In Love
Series: Part 1 of Aurora Australis
Summary:
Winter is coming and anything is possible at the edge of the world. For Patrice, this includes endless darkness, birthday floor hockey, shaving your head for charity, polar T3 syndrome, the aurora, and finding what he never expected.
Bookmarker's Notes:This is a lovely half a novel that is almost completely divorced from its hockey context and utterly independent of fandom knowledge, like she could just find and replace the names and sell it. As an original novel, it's a charming and rather quiet, sweet but not overstated romance.

Relationships: Sidney Crosby/Tyler Seguin
Characters: Tyler Seguin, Sidney Crosby
Additional Tags: Friends With Benefits, Oral Sex, Dirty Talk, Excessive shirtless selfies
Summary:
Tyler thinks fuck it, if Crosby wants to sext him through snapchat, he’s game.
Bookmarker's Notes:This is one of those stories with a premise so perfect that it's hard to imagine how it could possibly go wrong. Not that the execution disappoints: I laughed the whole way and then kept laughing randomly for hours as I remembered it. Part of the beauty is that it all seems to spring naturally from characterization. Like if anyone was going to accidentally send softcore sexy selfies it would be Seguin, who is practically a walking Texts From Last Night. And the Sidney Crosby response is priceless and extremely Sidney Crosby.

Relationships: Gabriel Landeskog/Tyson Barrie
Characters: Nathan MacKinnon, Erik Johnson, Matt Duchene, Roman Josi
Additional Tags: Friends With Benefits, Modern Royalty
Summary:
The one where Tyson's fooling around with Gabe, already way out of his league, and then finds out he's apparently fooling around with a prince. And he might be a little bit in love with him. It's pretty brutal.
Bookmarker's Notes:This is exactly what this pairing should be, and a SUPER excellent job of conveying the hilarity but with emotional depth and poignance...
...and then also, a plot about secretly being modern royalty as well. Though as the author's notes indicate, that part is definitely a minority of what's going on in the story, which is the opposite of how these royalty AUs usually work. Fairly accessible without knowledge of hockey or the characters, but the essence of its genius is how plausibly it expands on Tyson Barrie's extremely public Thirst, so having seen that will probably add to one's appreciation.

Relationships: Sidney Crosby/Claude Giroux
Characters: Sidney Crosby, Claude Giroux, Pittsburgh Penguins Ensemble, Philadelphia Flyers Ensemble, Taylor Crosby
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - High School, Alternate Universe - Always a Different Sex, Recreational Drug Use, Underage Drinking, Fluff, Teen Angst, Enemies to Friends to Lovers
Summary:
In the end, Sidney can blame the whole thing on Taylor, because it all starts when she makes a new friend.
Bookmarker's Notes:Pens and Flyers as rival girls high school hockey teams and Sid and Claude as teenaged girls was a surprisingly short leap of the imagination and this was awfully cute. I kept stopping partway through to reality check why it was so easy to picture and/or so absorbing, actually. There are a lot of friends' names dropped, but no knowledge is really necessary.

Relationships: William Karlsson/Alexander Wennberg
Characters: William Karlsson, Alexander Wennberg, Columbus Blue Jackets Ensemble
Additional Tags: Slow Burn, Canon Compliant, Friends to Lovers
Summary:
“Thanks,” says Alex, “for—” and sort of gestures around the room.
“What are friends for, huh? You say that like I’m doing you a favour hanging out with you,” Will teases him gently. And then he’s gone, and Alex—
Alex feels a little better than he did this morning.
Bookmarker's Notes:This is a straightforward classic kind of friends-to-lovers romance that earned bonus points for maybe the first fictional portrayal I've read of people being realistically competent at assembling Ikea. I read this without knowing who the principal characters are myself, so it's definitely not important. (I googled them later, don't worry.)

Relationships: Nicklas Backstrom/Alexander Ovechkin
Characters: Tom Wilson, Michael Latta, Andre Burakovsky, Washington Capitals Ensemble, Nicklas Backstrom, Alexander Ovechkin
Additional Tags: Pining, Alternate Universe - Superheroes/Superpowers, Canon Compliant, 2015-2016 NHL Season
Summary:
“Think the storm did it,” Sasha tells the kids over lunch the next day. Andre got last place in their morning skate shootout contest, so he’s paying.
“Did what?” Willy says through a mouthful of sushi.
Sasha points at him with his chopsticks. “Your powers,” he says. “Snowzilla comes, suddenly everyone’s mutants? Something happened there, no other explanation.”
Latts strokes his chin. “Didn’t the Flash get struck by lightning or something? It’s not totally crazy.”
Bookmarker's Notes:Laugh out loud and then actually read quotes out loud for whoever will listen: it's been a while since that happened. Also, I'm pretty jealous of some of these 'silly' super powers. This fic is almost gen - all pairing content is understated and shows up late, which is understandable with RL old married hockey soulmates whose hockey soulmateness is like 8 year old news like Ovi and Bäckström. Also not particularly characterization-dependent, even though it has a fairly large ensemble cast.

Relationships: Paul Martin/James Neal
Characters: Rich Clune, Paul Martin, James Neal, Pittsburgh Penguins Ensemble
Additional Tags: References to Addiction, Unsafe Sex
Summary:
James Neal falls in love, gets traded, gets his shit together and (mostly) grows the fuck up. Just not necessarily in any order that makes sense.
He hears it's the journey that counts, not the destination.
Bookmarker's Notes:Like so many people, I used to read this pairing a few years ago, but it mostly went away after they were traded to separate teams, which tends to make shipping kind of sad at best. This story makes a virtue of necessity and turns the whole thing around into an intensely pining story that anybody who loves pining stories would probably like. Again, although this refers to reality, it's nothing that would prevent the reader from getting anything important and could just as well have been find-and-replaced and sold.
