Oh yes! That pivotal event is pushed up to frame the beginning, and I saw a piece of it but not the worst part, but they came back to it later after doing the sad, no-lightbulbs dystopian spaceship version of "yep that's me/ you're probably wondering how I got in this situation...". So I ultimately saw her die, and also saw my dude making a lot of crazy faces while everyone sat motionless through 20+ situations when they should've CLEARLY locked him up or knocked him unconscious, even though I missed most of the actually violent moments.
