My many visits to Atlanta (Mr Dr's home town) taught me that basically NONE of the windows open, the ones in my in-laws' places always seemed to be painted shut. I found it absolutely stifling when we visited at e.g. Thanksgiving, when the weather was generally balmy and mild and just the sort of time when I want fresh air. But the Atlantans believed in AC or heat, all the time.
