brief intercession of serious-y real life-y stuff

so my [same-age] cousin whose husband is serving in iraq just emailed me that he's been injured--very mildly, apparently, "just a broken hand and shrapnel wounds plus some hearing loss from the explosion".  so i haven't seen any details but--uh--i guess that means he was too close to a bomb, and wow, that's a very close miss.  but his tour of duty was totally finished in a month; he's flying back early to be hospitalised at his home base and she's going to meet him in the next couple of days, although typically, the army aren't communicating with her properly and she can't find out when-where-what flight to book.

wow.

*shudder*

she's missing her older brother (my ex-convict1 cousin)'s wedding next weekend because of this.

1. no, really

My [livejournal.com profile] gallerae's nephew was stationed in Iraq. (Both nephews actually; both are home now.) His commander asked him to go cut a blown tire off their vehicle so they could change it-- though why he didn't ask him to jack it up and change it normally I don't know-- and his knife flipped back and almost took of his thumb. Long story short: injury = home.

Weird. Good weird.

that sorta reminds me of a very long engagement with the french soldiers trying to shoot their hands to get sent back. it is good--too bad it didn't save him even a whole month of time.

yeah, it'd be a lot more fortunate if he was getting out of more time, but since his mates will be back probably before he's out of the hospital at this rate he hasn't really gained anything. he was the only one injured.

Yikes! Good thoughts to your cousin, and le's hope the army gets its head out of its arse and lets her know what she needs to know. :/
