I sort of expected that one would get to know Hastings better in some illuminating way by reading the novels he narrated, but that they'd be significantly less slashy. I wanted to se what his narrative voice was like, so I flung myself into The Mysterious Affair at Styles anyway, only to discover that Poirot is rather more affectionate than in the film, and Hastings talks about the colour of his eyes all the time (apparently they get greener when he's thinking. What is he, a Mary Sue? Of course Suchet's eyes are brown, so...). But meanwhile, I think Hastings is a good deal less likeable, but more importantly, quite different. I suppose not different enough to make the information useless...
