one further belated post-script to the vacation disaster saga
my mother just called me to say she's afraid they might have to pay the hospital bill from paris themselves even though they have three insurances that all should cover it... and she says this when they haven't yet filed any of the paperwork. why? because mom thinks it should be dad's job to handle the paperwork and dad, according to her, thinks it should be hers, but on further inquiry, it turns out that she thinks that because he keeps asking her to fill out parts of the forms that only she can fill out (he claims, she says). furthermore, she informed me that he asks her if they can fill out the forms together, but what he means by that is that she can fill them out while he sits there at the computer. it didn't appear to strike her as remotely strange to say this about someone who cannot use his hands to write (well, not normally. he can't hold a pen without a little case that goes around his hand to keep it in place, so his signature - which is mostly all he writes - is extremely wobbly). apparently dad is really stressed about these forms because he thinks all three companies will refuse the claims (on no particular basis that mom could explain). when i suggested getting the paperwork done faster would be the only way to alleviate the stress, she produced more of that helpless babble, plus a rant about how she had to handle the crisis when they were in paris, so he should take care of it all now.

wow. I think I would probably have been beating my head against the phone. I'm sure your mom's just stressed out and will come to her senses after the initial freak out.
