Oh god. Me too. The only time I've written one was for a cliche challenge on a West Wing adult list I'm on. And, actually, I didn't like what I wrote (although it was very funny) and never sent it out to the list.
"Songfics" are where, instead of writing meaningful characterisation, plot, dialogue, etc., the author inserts lyrics from songs to augment her own writing. Usually Lilith Fair-type stuff, for some reason - Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos are both very popular choices. It's sort of the textual equivalent of the musical interludes that tend to occur on teen-oriented TV shows, where they show the two main characters who are In Love staring out the window at the moon, or something, while a love song swells in the background, cue credits. Except that it tends to come off as being even more cheezy and manipulative than on TV, since you don't get visuals or sound. I've seen songfics where, literally, the entire thing was maybe four lines of one character confessing their love to another, and then the entire lyrics to a Christina Aguilera song. Ugh.
