adventures in plebefic

Last night an idle delicious search prompted by Yuletide-born curiosity (there's a very amusing Mac & PC story in this year's Yuletide haul called Hanging Out, BFF, with a running joke about Vista security settings) showed me that there exists a plebe fandom for Mac/PC fic. There's usually badfic, now, but that doesn't mean there's always plebefic for everything. I didn't expect a community including 13-chapter epics, unintentionally funny authors' notes, and cut tags that look like "( -:¦:-•:*''''*:•.-:¦:-Let the Magic Begin-:¦:-•:*''''*:•-:¦:- )". When I followed a bookmark to the main community, that cut tag confronted me right on the main page, along with a high school AU and several pieces of fanart based on it. Also the line, "Ahh, Macintosh, now I finally have you in my grasp." The things you can find on the internet. I daren't look for the inevitable story about Mac and PC getting Ideas from slash about them. The creative use of USB ports was already a bit much for me.

Wow, I wouldn't have expected that, either.

Speaking of Yuletide, I bookmarked a Jon/Stephen fic or two to read, but I'm so scared of that fandom thanks to you! XD

I read them! Neither is badfic! One is a hilarious one about the fictional characters from The Colbert Report (and rather mis-sorted in my view. That hardly counts as RPS). The other is a kind of bittersweet nostalgic thing where not much happens and it's not all that slashy: not my cup of tea, but not badly written.

I'm a veteran of that comm.

[livejournal.com profile] dysmorph's System Restore was pretty good: standard h/c + amnesia, only with computers. There's a link to all 13 parts on the front page of the comm. And [livejournal.com profile] margarks wrote this fluffy thing with the terrible anachronism in the first story, and also this serious noncon (with a sequel), and also sappy kidfic. And [livejournal.com profile] svilleficrecs wrote this Mac/Vista Guardian bdsm fic. Also: some of [livejournal.com profile] dysmorph's fanart.

Yeah, there are also things I don't click on unless I'm actually looking for badfic, but where isn't there?

I love the Mac/PC pairing because there's so much science fiction / cyberpunk potential. Not every story lives up to it. But yeah - I like the USB port thing - finding computer equivalents for human things, and anthropomorphic responses to computer things, is what drew me to Mac/PC.
