damn hiccups

I seem to have the hiccups on practically a daily basis lately, and they're really utterly loathesome. I hate hiccups so much that if I found out they were caused by any foods other than salt or chocolate I would ruthlessly eliminate them from my diet. I'm pretty sure they aren't of course. But it's a huge drag.

Besides hiccups, I have deja vu all the time, sometimes more intensely than others. Thanks to Google and Wikipedia (otp!) I know that it's thought to be a symptom of anxiety but nobody really knows why or how, but I keep feeling I should mention it because the frequency can be rather creepy. I never remember to bring it up with Dr. Dignified (one can't help respecting and being a little in awe of the psychiatrist; I'm not sure why) or Dr. Who Looks Like Steve Buscemi. And there's also this crazy thing I have of picking at my fingernails and cuticles all the time, and scraping up the hangnails and trimming the loose skin and frequently ending up with very sore fingertips. I suppose they maybe can't really do anything about it, but perhaps Dr. WLLSB knows what sort of advice to give about it or something. It's better than biting my nails, at least. And on the plus side I've managed to stop myself from actually tearing them, most of the time, which is much worse.

Also, I read a story with unwarned-for Original Canine Character death, and the dog was a beagle. I cried, for the first time in like six months (at a story, I mean, not in general). Dammit! Dogs dying is nearly as bad as daddies dying, and it was a beagle. (I have this vague intent that the next dog I get, when I'm quite old of course since Perry should live another seven or ten years or something, should be smaller than a beagle, so that if I ever have to take it on an emergency transoceanic flight it can come on the plane as carry-on luggage, and not have to suffer a day of panic attacks in the baggage compartment like Perry did; but it's really hard to imagine getting a dog that wasn't a beagle, because even the closest relatives like dachshunds and so on seem to have remarkably less adorable personalities. Maybe in ten years I'll be more rational about it, though.)

I do have a method for getting rid of hiccups that has worked 99.9% of the time for me, and my mother and sister insist that the .01% was a time I was doing it wrong, because apparently they're at 100%. (I wasn't doing it wrong! I was stunned when it failed.)

Maybe you already have a way, I don't know, but have you ever tried the thing where you drink from the opposite side of the cup? It means you have to tip over forward to get the water (tea, soda, whatever) to your mouth, which somehow, amazingly, works. I suppose it's a variation on the idea of drinking upside down, because it's almost doing just precisely that.

A word of warning if you have never done: Don't forget to not breathe. For some reason when I bend over to drink, I completely forget that one is not capable of inhaling oxygen and water at the same moment. Quite bizarre!

I've never been able to find the logistics for that. I used to take a spoonful of sugar, but came to believe it was superstition (or the placebo effect) and not a real cure.

Hiccups suck. Eating quickly seems to be a hiccup trigger for me, for whatever that's worth.

I hate animal harm in stories. Really gets to me.

On a more cheerful note, I read a story once that had an OMC (and love-interest for one of the characters) called Roland. I had to do a search-and-replace renaming before I could read the story. (I ended up renaming the OMC 'OMC'.) And after all that it wasn't very good.

who brought you up!? A spoonful of sugar really does work very well most of the time. And drinking out of the opposite side of the cup is even more effective. If you need to practice that, go stand in the bathtub or shower until you figure it out. It sounds harder than it is. If necessary, you can get wax to hold the cup the first time and then you'll see.

Hmmm. That reminds me, I used to get deja vu all the time, ever since I was a little kid - but now I haven't had any in years. I wonder if my medication suppresses the mechanism somehow. I'm happy that they're gone, in any case. I hate it how they really really feel like something has happened before, even when you know it's just a brain glitch. I always start to think about it too intensely and it feels like my brain gets sprained.

Also, dog deaths in stories/movies/stuff always make me angry and sad. >:(
