cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (bend it like beckham)

Lara would go DOWN (before Serena Williams*)

cim: OK, this is kind of hot, but what kind of HIGHLY ATHLETIC SPORT requires you to wear a SKIRT? WTF, tennis? This is the 21st century.
[livejournal.com profile] perhael: LOL, inorite! I think women are actually allowed to wear shorts now, in tennis - since like... last year or something.
cim: You can stop pretending you are all dancing out onto the lawn at some Gosford Park house party!
cim: Yeah, usually... but my impression from pictures is that at the big games they usually don't because it's like, shocking or...
[livejournal.com profile] perhael: Yeah. LOL omg how shocking, a girl in shorts!
cim: My impression is that it's sort of like wearing pants to a wedding.
cim: But considering they're professional athletes and NOT AT GOSFORD PARK, y'know? It is not a ladylike genteel upperclass British pursuit! She's a highly muscled American and she could probably beat up Lara Croft!
[livejournal.com profile] perhael: Srsly, Lara would go DOWN
[livejournal.com profile] perhael: ...Mmmm, tennis in Lara Croft outfits
cim: mmmm Lara Croft's outfit
cim: LOL jinx.
[livejournal.com profile] perhael: Lol! It's true though.

*And okay, that's not where my mind was originally with the title, but it's not a bad place...

Netball (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netball). I spent many years wearing a little skirt much less flash than this one (http://www.theage.com.au/ffximage/2008/05/12/svNETBALL_narrowweb__300x511,0.jpg").

See also, hockey (http://www.theage.com.au/ffximage/2006/03/25/hock8_wideweb__470x327,0.jpg).

You'll notice there's a tendency to wear little lycra shorts underneath.

Mmm yeah, field hockey skort outfits are kind of precious - still kind of laughable, but they'd be cool enough for, like, a performing punk artist.

The shorts thing is weird. A lot of players wear skirts that are essentially designed only to be worn with shorts (a combination known as a skort). Maria Sharapova wore her shorts and tux look (http://www.downthelinetennis.com/2008/06/fashion-fix-sharapova-nike-debut-tuxedo.html) at Wimbledon this year.

Mmmm, I remember Maria's tux well. It didn't actually look that good in the action shots, though, compared with how it no doubt looked on the mannequin...

And hey, I've worn skorts. You know, when I was like... six.

Hope you don't mind. ;)

Martina Navratilova has been wearing shorts since the 90's.

Yes, I think the Williams sisters have also worn shorts in tennis for some time, although not in every tournament obviously - according to pictures I've seen. But I think my comments about how widespread it is (or isn't, rather) still stand. My comparison, too. There are some women who have been wearing dressy pants for evening occasions and weddings for quite a while.
