family awkwardness. it happens.

My Fundie uncle and aunt sent me a Christmas card without any personal message inside, but this isn't a surprise - I've never been super close to them anyway. Of the family, they're the only ones whose beliefs might be homophobic, but I could never see them cutting off contact as a result of it. I wouldn't ever have expected such from my grandparents, until I found out my grandfather was homophobic five years ago and chewed him out sharply for it, but I sent them a holiday card anyway two years in a row now (and they followed my lead). I wonder if there was some message intended in my grandmother writing "Enjoy Christmas and your life" and "We love you", or it just came out as part of the grind of Trying to Find Things to Say in Christmas Cards. My grandmother did email me a kind of horrifying Fwd comparing Jesus to Santa Claus ("Jesus is the reason for the season!") last week that had me thoroughly confused, especially as I don't think I've ever gotten any proselytizing from her before - she struck me as the type to talk about Jesus only with people she already knew to be open to the subject. Maybe she selected me in her address book by accident.

My aunt kept sending me racist forwards (these emails always had big waving American flags at the bottom because clearly loving one's country = hate everybody but the white people) and so I invited two of my black friends over for Thanksgiving while she was there cramming her big face with pie. It was a beautiful moment for me.

Speaking of, I just got your Christmas card in the mail ("Jesus Christ it's a lion! GET IN THE CAR."). I laughed my ass off, and the rest of my household agreed that it is, in fact, the most awesome card any of them have seen. Props for LolJesus!

I actually remembered which one I sent to you (it was the first one I wrote out), but it's nice that you said anyway! I always buy a package with four different kinds or something and then have relatives emailing me a month later to make a comment on the content that leaves me clueless! I would have gotten only that one (what could be more appropriate?) if not for fear of offending certain relations...
