cimorene: painting of a glowering woman pouring a thin stream of glowing green liquid from an enormous bowl (misanthropy)

that evil klez virus.

i'm sure there's no one in fandom whose name it's not using by now. i get emails purporting to be from... everyone, practically. i know they aren't really from them. i delete them. it's the virus.

so what does surprise me is that anyone in existence could be unaware of the virus. apparently someone is, because just now i get an email consisting only of 'please stop emailing me blank emails thanks.' um?

no one likes getting virus emails. no one. and we're all going to be stuck with it until everyone in the known universe does that time-consuming thingy you have to do to get rid of it, and even then, who knows. maybe by then other people will be re-infected. it's like the common cold. we're all stuck with it. we all get five of these a day.

i could send out a snappish and testy response, but i won't. ::performs breathing exercises::

I want to know how they get sent from me. Because I use hotmail. And. Feh. They fill up my junk mail and there's nothing I can do.

I like having hotmail just becauase I don't d/l the email and therefore don't get the virus.

i don't think you have to have the virus for it to use your name--when someone gets it it searches their address book, and uses fake senders and fake subject lines, both drawn from their computer.

It searches your disk cache for email addresses, too. I hate this virus; I get copy after copy after copy of it *and* those emails you describe... it really makes me extra angry because it uses my name. It seems like this is t he virus that will never die...

Also, if you get emails back as "undeliverable" which you never sent-- that's the virus too, trying to send to people whose addies have changed, using your spoof name, and bouncing back to the address of yours that it spoofed. >_

I knew the not having bit. But I was weirded out as to how it would send from my hotmail account. But! I understand now. Makes sense :)

ah, c'mon. do it! for me. grr.

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2002-07-23 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, i want to. but. eh. it's so much energy spent on being vituperative to a twit who may not even believe me when all's said and done.

yeah, that's the thing. the people who are most worthy if this kind of thing are also the least likely to shut up and listen. hmph.
