cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (wtf?)

oh and. lj style customization question.

so my little sister is out of town for the week, but i'm thinking i'm going to create a livejournal layout for her--and a journal, obviously--while she's gone. can someone tell me how to make the boxes in the 'generator' style narrow and on the right side of the screen? like, do you alter them up in the 'event' boxes, or down in the one that has the html for the page at once? and how do you make them over on the right side of the screen but still with a border on the outside--is that called a 'cushion'? if you can't explain that in a few sentences, don't bother, 'cause if i can't understand it that fast it's probably not worth it. i can make her a layout without an image in the background.

[edit: thanks to [livejournal.com profile] loreleif and [livejournal.com profile] uluviel. i figured it out. who'd've thought there's a [livejournal.com profile] howto journal?]

A bit like I did in my livejournal (http://uluviel.livejournal.com)?

Because if that's what you want, I can make the code public for you and you can tweak it as you like.

yeah, like that, only the entries a little narrower and the image a little wider, probably.

so what i mean is: yes, thank you. i would like to use that code. how would i go about using the code once you made it public?

These are the codes:
Most Recent Events: 98558
Friends View: 102181
Calendar: 102213
Day View: 102214

To set these styles, you go to the Create Style (http://www.livejournal.com/styles/create.bml) page. (Log in, of course... and you have to be have a paid account). Then, you choose one of the four types (for instance Friends View) and enter the corresponding # in the box 'enter a non-system public Style ID#' Then you go to Edit Style (http://www.livejournal.com/styles/edit.bml), select the style you just added and modify it.

If you need any help in tweaking the codes (changing box sizes, colors, etc...) just IM me. I made the entire code myself (looks like generator, but it's actually built from scratch), so I know exactly how to work with it. I'm home all day, I'll leave my IM on and check back every hour or so. My IM nicknames are in my LJ userinfo.

What the heck, I was bored. -g-

Is this (http://www.livejournal.com/customview.cgi?user=loreleif&styleid=117193) what you meant? (Ignore the eye-bleeding colours; what works on my page really doesn't with this layout!)

[identity profile] cimness.livejournal.com 2002-07-23 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm not sure if that would work or not, because then the image would go behind the words themselves, wouldn't it? well, that might, actually... if i tweaked it to make the background inside the 'event' box the page background color too, and then just the box outlines would float over the image. anyway. so how did you do it?

[identity profile] loreleif.livejournal.com 2002-07-23 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
No, the way I did it uses two table cells; one is blank, one holds the event, so you could easily put the picture in the blank cell on the left. When you said you wanted the border still on the outside, I thought that was the look you were going for. If you just want boxes with borders on the right side of the screen and the background everywhere else, that's different, and just as easy. I made the code public; it's #117193, if you want to take it and tweak it. Or tweak Uluviel's, if that's what you were looking for.

Best of luck!
