... Just for anthropological purposes, was this a Swedish Finn or a Finnish Finn? Or is it something they all do?

Finnish Finn. But I don't think all of them do it. A friend did make pizza with tomato paste instead of seasoned sauce for me once, though, and Wax opined that that wasn't that strange if I recall.

EDIT: But my brother-in-law and his wife, who are rather ignorant of cooking (they didn't know how gravy or white sauce are made - ie about thickening - when it came up in conversation) and don't use recipes still put basil and oregano in with the tomato when they make "Italian" style dishes. Not perhaps always as much of it as called for, but they have it and they use it.

My husband's family does this too, on occasion. I think it really is just a Finnish thing! In fact, I think one of those sauces where they add the ketchup was taught to them in a school cooking class. They've just developed a taste for ketchup in weird places!

Sometimes I like to pretend that there are people who use 'ketchup' and 'tomato paste' interchangeably to avoid precisely this issue.
