and, my lovely darlings, i have three otps in three separate fandoms. let's go through them in order of importance, shall we?
Why: it's all there in canon, and the tos episodes are one of the richest grounds for experimentation with character i've ever seen. they go so very near to those archetypes, and the characters are simultaneously larger than life and deep and detailed (by the characters i mean spock, kirk and mccoy, cause the others don't really exist)
Canon (books) or Fanon (films): canon. although fanon doesn't mean films, so. um? anyway, i go mostly by the eps, but i draw on some fanon, of course, in a fandom this old. it's mostly inevitable.
Popularity Level in the Fandom at Large: [my edit: and what fandom would that be?] it's #1 by a long shot, makes up more than 50% of all fics in tos, and maybe even close to that for all of trek.
Your Favorite OTP Fic (yours) and why: [what i am to you]. my beta said that when she edited my earlier fic, "unintended," she had a lot more to say because it was her job to smoothe out the bits that, as she put it "weren't" yet. and "what i am" didn't need so much of that because it "already was." and i feel somewhat that way about it too. also, i'm a big sucker for late in life stories.
Your Favorite OTP Fic (someone else's) and why: k'sal's [in check]. best characterization of kirk you can encounter in the fandom anywhere.
OTP Quote/Movie Lines: stiii: amnesiac! back from dead!spock: "jim. your name is jim."
sti: spock, in sickbay on cot, grasping jim's arm and holding his hand, hoarsely: "for all its knowledge, v'ger is barren... cold. jim. this simple feeling is beyond v'ger's comprehension."
Favorite OTP Moment: the abovementioned, the end of "amok time," almost all of "the tholian web"
What Pisses You Off About Your OTP: bad fic. STI's plot and that whole purging emotion thing.
Line that Describes Your OTP: [my remark: umm, this may be a little too, well, twee.] otoh, how about northrop frye: "the primitive and the popular, like the learned and the subtle, tend towards the center of imaginative experience."
Song that Defines your OTP, and let's See Them Lyrics: their essence is that whole live/die for you best friends there's nothing else in the world but you thing. a number of songs come to mind, but i'm not sure i'd be willing to quote any of them; song lyrics lose some power taken away from melodies. think of queen, "you're my best friend," "my melancholy blues" (although you have to take 'baby left me' out as the reason for the blues), maybe "the prophet's song," in a wildly metaphoric manner.
Why: 9.9 adorable as all hell.
