Oh, I *really* like this story, particularly how skillfully you capture Holmes' appeal (including his near-manic changeability) for Watson.

The quote you use for the final section - "It is fortunate for this community that I am not a criminal." - struck me as extremely appropriate, not only because Holmes *is* rather criminal in many of the things he does to solve cases, but also (of course) because by the end of the story, he and Watson have - by making love - added one more layer of "criminality" to their lives, at least a far as their (English) community is concerned.

(The only thing I might have liked to see would have been a slightly more significant role for Mycroft. I mean, as far as I remember, canon requires him to be there, but in that case it would have been nice to see him *doing* something, even if it's just giving a vaguely knowing look to Watson *g*)

In any case...this is a very lovely story and a pleasure to read.

well, i lifted that dialogue from the dvd, and mycroft *doesn't* give a knowing look to watson. i believe this is because mycroft, like holmes, has a sort of single-minded focus. there might be some reproach or surprise in his glance at holmes--ie at holmes's frivolity in choosing LAST NIGHT'S free time to get lucky. of course he can hardly miss the signs in holmes. i mean, the viewer can't miss them; he really is wonderfully dishevelled. what he says is something along the lines of 'splendid, sherlock! i always said you would have made an excellent cat-burglar.' i also like the character very well, but i didn't want to make the ending too long. was afraid of losing the momentum of the afterglow. although i'm sure you're right the story could have benefitted from more content of the actual case and less of the personal thingy. i'll try to see to that on my next attempt.

have you seen the brett/hardwicke granada productions? from the 80s/90s? because he's just like that in them. they might have 'em at your public library if you live in america/england/canada.

(i enjoy it too; i can't watch a clip without giggling, gasping, squealing. they're absolutely deathly adorable.)

Oh, I loved this! I've seen quite a few of the Granada adaptations, but not Bruce Partington. But I could see H&W so clearly in this story-- so much that, at least until the sex scene, I had no idea which scenes were your own invention and which were spackles. I do hope you write more Holmes/Watson!

ellen, you've got to see the granada bruce-partington. holmes's deshabille and smug afterglowiness are hysterical. and he's so cute! it's far slashier than the written canon version.
