not much.

you know what i miss the most about america, barring actual members of my immediate family? domestic phone rates to the us and canada.  dammit.

certain better halves who kept getting side-tracked from hbp-reading all weekend finally finished it last night, and yet i still haven't started it; i actually woke up this morning and started writing.

When I was calling the US and Canada all the time, I picked up one of those phone cards that you buy at the supermarket or youth hostels or newsagencies, and the rates were insane: 1 cent per minute, plus, I think, about a 15cent flagfall. Which meant, basically, that I could call the US for an hour at local call rates + $0.75. Which, since our local calls are 15cents and untimed, worked out under a dollar per call.

The upfront fee of $20 (or $30 or $50) can be hard to come up with, but it meant that calling the US or Canada for me wasn't even a deliberation, I could just work out the time zone and call.

hmm, i don't know whether they have anything like that here or not. i'd have to ask wax.

You might want to look into prefixes. There are loads of them in Germany and they undercut the regular rate for international calls massively.

o.0 :surreptitiously googles: ...nope, all the results are about US area codes. what's a prefix?

[identity profile] wax-jism.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
the prefix is the 994 or 990 or 999 or whatever that comes first. they do have different rates.

ohho. wait, they DO? so it's not wise to pick one at utter random?

i don't have cause to use pouty joe very much but he's so cute!

[identity profile] wax-jism.livejournal.com 2005-07-18 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it depends on where you're calling, and so forth. It's probably an idea to check what their offers are.

Pouty Joe <3!

yet i am so, so lazy...

Err, that might not be the right word. It's a number you dial to access a cheapo telecom provider rather than the regular one. It's a "vorwahl" in German, if that helps.

mystery solved.
