PSA: cimorene.net

cimorene.net is down because it is hosted on a server of [livejournal.com profile] isilya's which was recently suspended without warning by dreamhost. i hope they respond to her request to undelete, since i've lost my backups of almost all my lord of the rings and lord of the rings rps fiction. if they do no drastic measures will be necessary, but if they don't i'll probably have to go looking through mailing list archives at yahoo groups if i want some stuff back.

You can always use the wayback machine as well

Yeah, I was going to suggest the wayback machine (archive.org) as well, but it looks like it's already been used above.

I cannot actually figure out how my server survived what I'm thinking of as the Dreamhost Passover. It might have to do with the fact that they actually sent me two warnings about hosting .avis and executable files during the last 6 weeks, with a list to all the files they'd scanned (all of them on the meme's ftp server). So I had plenty of time to go through and rename and delete all the rars, zips and so forth. I'm still honestly not sure what the difference was, except that I made sure that I didn't have a large number of executable files anywhere on site.

I feel awful for Isilya because she allowed so many of us to even have Dreamhost accounts to begin with.

If something happens and you want to stay with DH (not that you would, but I'm just saying) you are always welcome to park your domain or have a subdomain at nqr.net. I almost wish there was something I could do for Isilya herself but I suspect that would make things worse. I hope very much they respond to her request to undelete.

i probably won't want to stay - #1 i'm pissed off, because they haven't warned her and she hasn't uploaded lately (and i never even knew .rars weren't allowed), and all the uploads had been deleted from my section; and #2 wax and i still have waxjism.org and i have plenty of room to put the stuff back there. the host doesn't have as much space for as little money as dreamhost, but they're small and finnish and friendly and have never gone after anyone's kneecaps with a bat, to the best of our knowledge.

If either of you are looking for new webhosts, I strongly recommend Surpass Hosting (http://surpasshosting.com/). It's $6/month for 200 GB bandwidth and 80 GB storage, and comes with all sorts of useful (optional) gadgets like built-in support for forums, galleries, SQL databases, etc.

They also have no content restrictions beyond not hosting illegal content, so porn and zip files are kosher.

Okay, they've upgraded the service. It's now $6/month for 2000 GB bandwidth and 200 GB storage. So like, they rule.

wow they do rule.
