Hello, hello. This is the maintainer of lecollage, obviously, and I'm just going around and commenting to those of you who have filled out the poll in the community and have stated that you don't want any new makers to be given posting access. Well, I now realize that I should have left a "Please give a reason" section in the poll, but I didn't, so this will have to work.
I can pretty much guess why people select "yes"--they want to see more icons and different styles--but I'm not too sure of the various reasons people have selected "no." Can you tell me your reason? It is perfectly alright to select no, and I'm very glad for the input and the participation in the community, but I just want to make sure I know where everyone is coming from. So please let me know. (:
Thanks. And also, thanks for filling out the poll and for your support of and participation in lecollage.
Hi! Since you asked, I'm afraid I can't find a way to explain my logic that's not long-winded. Feel free not to read it if you please. Of course it's your own community and you should ultimately follow whichever idea you like best.
It seems to me that you can be an icon community - in which case you should either have a very specific purpose (retro icons, science fiction icons, art icons, etc) or a fairly broad purpose (for example, fine art like aesthetic icons - but allowing anyone to post). Or you can not be a community, in which case you are an individual artist whom people might find in a community by browsing, or else follow because they like you specifically. If they want to see more icons and different styles, it makes most sense for them to look in places where a lot of icon makers are to be found and check them out.
Combining these two approaches in a community with just a few members seems to me the worst of both worlds and quite inefficient. What you're proposing is essentially a small 'elite' community with yourself as the first gateway moderator and a secondary power of selection given to your readers, resulting in what is more or less a newsletter of icons with yourself as the editor. If a person is following you specifically for your work and other artists for the same reason, then this is inefficient because they may be seeing the posts of other artists whom they wouldn't have wanted to follow. If a person likes to see a wide range of icons, they would find more in a conventional community. Even if they'd like to see a small range of icons but not the volume of an open community, what are the odds that the majority's picks will align with their own? They can easily achieve the same small, select mixture of icon-makers on their own friendslist by individually friending several icon-makers whose work they enjoy. If the purpose is to point out worthwhile icon-makers to your readers whom they might not have considered (which is quite an interesting idea, I think), why not write about your own picks as you would have before asking for a vote, and simply let your readers friend them or not as they choose?
