Batman doesn't enjoy a cup of coffee with friends. Batman doesn't enjoy ANYTHING.

The Dark Knight made me want to watch Batman: The Animated Series again. I used to watch it just about every day when I was, I don't know, between the ages of nine and... thirteen, maybe. At the time, although I liked it, I didn't really think of it as my favourite show, because in general, I only liked tv when I felt my attention span, for whatever reason, couldn't handle books; and besides, I also liked Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, so my opinions of the time don't mean much.

But in retrospect, as I was discussing with [livejournal.com profile] hollsh last night, it was a really good show. One that would definitely beat both Heroes and Lost in a cage match, for example - not just good by Saturday morning cartoon standards (in the normal run of Saturday morning cartoons, the dialogue was somewhere around the level of the dialogue in Attack of the Clones. Or at least, only slightly better, I'd say). I think someone said that it was award-winning, but possibly I was imagining that.

I don't want to illegally obtain it, though. In the last few years [livejournal.com profile] wax_jism and I have more or less adopted a "pay for it if it's worth it" approach to entertainment, and if it's not worth it, I have a fairly large backlog of free things to watch, so. And I'm sure it's definitely worth it.

It had such a huge cast, and such a cool noir look which I noticed but didn't entirely grasp the meaning of at age 10, and it's, you know, Batman, who's nuts and 100% hilarious ("I'm Batman. I don't enjoy anything")(Has anyone invented Batman macros? They should. Maybe they have them at Superman Is A Dick). [livejournal.com profile] anglepoiselamp says it was never shown on Finnish tv at all, but unless I'm hallucinating things, I think I've spotted the box sets at Anttila.

On a related note, I went looking for Batman/Jim Gordon slash again, but everyone seems to take it so seriously. I was looking for more the way Batman shows up in Smallville futurefic. You know... a running joke, like "What is this? A social call?" said Jim. "Would you like a cup?" Batman couldn't drink coffee because the nose of the suit tended to get in the way. Fox said that if he needed coffee that badly, he should take a "break", whatever that was, so the feature was currently in... negotiation. He didn't say anything, because you don't talk about noses in the Batman Voice.

I loved the animated series, too. I remember watching it on the tiny TV screen in my Dad's office after school in junior high!

Yeah. It was a nice after-school enertainment. And if you missed some, it was never hard to pick it up again.

If I find something so amazing I will certainly pimp it out, rest assured.

The B:TAS box sets are absolutely worth it; I've been rewatching my copies like mad after seeing TDK. (Like you, I watched it on TV every day as a kid and enjoyed it, but had no idea how amazing it really was in terms of art and writing and acting until much later.)

The series actually won a couple of Emmys, if I'm not mistaken. The comics that spun off from it were equally as good--Mad Love even won an Eisner.

Cool. I'll definitely put it on my to-get list. Nice icon! You recognise the art right away!

I loved then and in retrospect appreciate even more that there were a lot of female characters. Even the female villains were cool - and there was lots of moral, good vs bad ambiguity in that show.

B:TAS is at least at the moment very difficult to acquire in a piratic fashion. And even though I haven't seen the series, I'd totally buy the DVDs if I could.

I was helping a friend with it a few years ago and it was rare but not completely without sources at that time... but they were not by any means complete for the whole series. So yeah, not a bit surprise.

You should write that fic. I'd totally read it.

Let me know if you have any idea how the rest of it would go. That's the main thing stopping me, I think. :)
