These thoughts were sparked by watching The Batman, which I enjoyed - a great deal for the first half, and then, well, I'm willing to stick with it to see the next one anyway. However:

The plot of The Batman took a left turn at about the halfway point. ExpandSpoilers for The Batman )

UH [livejournal.com profile] sinningia made a fancomic of one of my old Batman fics almost a YEAR AGO, and I know she told me about it, and I even remember going to look at it at the time... but somehow I didn't see all of it and I forgot about it!

And just now I found her message in my read folder and went to look at it again and was blown away. She's done an incredibly detailed rendition of the first half of the post-TDK Batman/Gordon UST fic Liquid Comfort with a full 42 pages! :O

Obviously it's pretty exciting having a comic made out of something I wrote, but it's also eye-opening in a way. Reading the fan comic is quite different from rereading what I wrote, or from looking at fanart of something I wrote. It somehow puts the story at a far enough remove, and through the artist's eyes, so that it's like new again, kind of. And it's amazing how the visual pacing of a comic format can alter the mood and pacing of the reading. And awesome.

We were behind Batman for a while yesterday! Surprisingly, he is Finnish.

batman is an asshole driver. and finnish

Unsurprisingly, he's an asshole tailgater.

Rorschach is like Batman, except for the crazy neo-Nazi everything-phobic political views.

Probably explains why his manners are so a) hilarious and b) endearing: "I'm Batman. I don't enjoy anything."

[livejournal.com profile] perhael has gotten a job and moved to a new apartment without regular internet service and I find myself attempting to finish the half-finished writing projects on my plate, so is there anyone else who would like to take over the task of encouraging me to finish a somewhat-more-than-half-done Batman/Gordon novellette (I think it's novellette-length right now)?

The last two years I didn't have time to make Valentines for you guys, so I started a day early today and I drew these little cartoons by hand, which means they are of lesser, yet probably more amusing quality than the 2005 and 2006 Valentine's Day posts. I've at LAST finished transferring the entirety of my old recs site to delicious!

My delicious account - all fanworks (mostly fiction, but like... 2 vids in there!) - now contains 2 867 bookmarks!

Considering I started this project sometime last March, I think the occasion calls for celebration!

http://delicious.com/cimness : the main account!

ExpandFandoms with over 50 bookmarks )

It's not exactly right to call this "recent" fandoms, but the ones I've been reading in the past year are

  • Batman, which is mostly Christopher Nolan's universe and mostly Batman/Gordon. I read a lot of that this fall. (26)

  • Bones. I think probably all of those are Brennan/Booth. (9)

  • Criminal Minds. I like Morgan/Garcia and Hotch/Rossi. I think I read some Hotch/Prentiss in there, too. (9)

  • DCU. I went through a phase of devouring Tim Drake/Kon-El stories this summer. (28)

  • Die Hard. McClane/Farrell exclusively, of course. (16)

  • Hot Fuzz. (11)

  • Ironman. Tony/Pepper, that is. I didn't read a lot of it before I got sick of the same things that always quickly enough drive me away from het. But rest assured, I did read it in all seriousness for a while - I just didn't find much that I liked enough to bookmark. (3)

  • Merlin. Haven't watched it, just read it. Fortunately, it seems a bit familiar. (21)

  • NCIS. I was reading this one, oh, a couple of months ago, until I ran out. I mean, I still give it a look when new pieces come up, of course, but the rate's not terribly fast... (51)

  • The Devil Wears Prada. I think a lot of us rediscovered the beauty of girl/girl this year (or, well, last year, but she's still writing it) thanks to Telanu's DWP fic.

It's a drag when you run out of enthusiasm mid-story, but that usually happens when I get writer's block for a short while - my attention span runs out, I move on to another fandom. But at least it's good if it happens because your craving has been more or less fulfilled and other people have more or less explored most of your ideas (as in Batman/Gordon - and there are quite readable explorations of them, although not, like, stellar ones, and that one WIP I recommended was good and abandoned like a week later - obviously I jinxed it - whereas the best writer in the fandom, whose non-native-speaker qualities are quite evident in her texts, became more productive and more careless and apparently decided to eschew all forms of proofreading)... as opposed to because you've given up hope and lost all respect for the fandom (like... I can't think of one I was going to write in that that was true of, now. But it's quite liable to happen with small, inactive fandoms with no goodfic, like Criminal Minds or The Daily Show or Life on Mars). So - it could be worse.

Considering I am at a broad estimate three scenes from the ending, I could probably finish the somewhat-epic Batman/Gordon story I was writing, actually, but I'm not sure if I will or not, still. Once [livejournal.com profile] wax_jism told me that Mikey Way shipped it, I kind of felt a surreal sense of "the fandom has arrived! What more can be said?" And I do have, like, 16 days left to write two ficlets for [livejournal.com profile] aeslis...

I signed up for 11 fandoms for Yuletide and somehow forgot The Dark Knight. But I suppose it might possibly be just as well since I have more than ten thousand words of an unfinished TDK story on my harddrive already...

In retrospect it was probably correct to remove Criminal Minds from Yuletide - a glance at the newsletter will show you that it's quite active, but the problem is that it's not active with good fic. I've only read two or three pieces that I could even call decent, so every Yuletide always greatly increased the chances for something readable out there. The fandom used to be dominated by Gideon/Reid, which grossed me out because G. practically adopted him in canon, but at least I could see the logic for that. Recently, however, Hotch/Reid has outstripped Morgan/Garcia in popularity, and that just makes no sense at all. What makes even less sense is that by far the most popular pairing is Prentiss/JJ, which just... you know, ok, lesbian is good, but even before JJ's boyfriend, there was barely a few minutes of female bonding between the two of them - the entire rationale was apparently that they're cute and female! If anything JJ should have been slashed with Garcia, hello? And it's not like anyone who would slash JJ with Prentiss is susceptible enough to logic to consider Garcia's Mulder/Scully thing with Morgan. Which, you know, I haven't disinherited anyone for shipping Morgan/Reid either, and the fact that it's not all that popular helps with that, and also the fact that canon obviously doesn't intend to do anything with Morgan/Garcia except keep the UST at the same level for seasons and seasons and seasons without ever resolving it. I can't even say that's a bad decision on their part. Anyway, Morgan and Garcia are both obviously going to be hooking up with other people in that time, and while we as fans have access to the metatext, as long as we're going against it consciously there's nothing particularly wrong with going against it (which is why tinhat Harry/Hermione shippers are alarming, whereas reasonable people who are just like 'hey, H/H might have been a better choice because Ron is a moron' are... reasonable!). Of course, preferring Morgan/Reid to Morgan/Garcia is indicative of bad taste by my lights, but I don't have to read it, and I've known worse. Wax's mom serves two kinds of gross pickled fish things AND these disgusting jars of mutton rolled up with fat, like a big Twinkie of Evil and Animal Bits, at every single Christmas, and that's in a hundred times worse taste than Morgan/Reid.

I still think they should remove Sherlock Holmes from Yuletide too, though. I mean, the quality of Yuletide writing is generally higher, so it's good for me personally that it's there, but in all fairness, the lj community has been increasingly active the last couple of years and it's pretty steadily healthful at this point.

I'm sure you noticed as soon as I did. It's Batman's fashion sense. Why is Batman orange?

Does anyone have any information about this alarming state of affairs?
cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (batman)
(I figured once I'd gone to the trouble to type this up, I should post it.) Almost any Batman/Gordon plot can by typified using the codes from this schema:

1. H/C from Batman to Jim:
1a. Batman rescues Jim daringly
1b. Batman takes Jim to the Batcave
1c. Batman bandages Jim's wounds

2. H/C from Jim to Batman:
2a. Jim rescues Batman daringly
2b. Jim takes Batman to his house
2c. Jim bandages Batman's wounds

3. Bruce Wayne and Jim
3a. Bruce Wayne flirts with Jim
3b. Bruce Wayne takes Jim out on a date
3c. Bruce Wayne invites Jim to a fundraiser/gala/party

4. Jim discovering Batman's identity
4a. Jim notices something familiar about either Bruce's or Batman's mouth
4b. Jim doesn't buy Bruce's playboy act
4c. Jim discovers Bruce/Batman's identity during sex

Writing meme: ExpandPost the first lines from each of your 25 most recent fanfic pieces and try to find a pattern. )

The most notable pattern, for me, is that the first lines of each fandom are more similar to each other than to the others. Overall, there's 10 of what I'd call setup first lines (ie when the beginning of the action happens, this is what's already going on...) and only #7 & #16 start with an emotional reaction/character monologue (although 7 could sort of count as setup and 16 as action as well). 11 start with action and there are three, all in the same fandom, that start with dialogue.

It took me quite a while to find the appropriate boxes, and required comparing notes from Wikipedia, IMDb and Amazon.com/Amazon.co.uk simultaneously. This is because the Region 2 releases are in no way equivalent to the Region 1 (ie 5 episodes per box instead of 60, or something like that, bringing the total episodes available in r2 to like 20, when the total episodes in r1 are in the hundreds). The boxes are all listed as imported at Amazon.de and Amazon.co.uk, but I eventually found them for like half the price at HMV with no such remarks, for some reason (8£ vs 17£/21€).

Stone Age skeletons in the Sahara! And to me this is the coolest part: About 100 million years ago, this land was forested and occupied by dinosaurs and enormous crocodiles. Not that that's new, just... GIANT CROCODILES! Crocodiles are cool! I love crocodilians!

Has anyone else noticed that the Dictionary.com word of the day is, about half the time, an annoyingly, obnoxiously elementary joke? I don't look at it on purpose: it shows up in the news headlines in gmail. "Blackguard"? Seriously? Anyone who teaches elementary language arts should look into using this site. Or anyone who teaches ESL. Not anyone who is actually an adult and a native speaker of English. "Meticulous"? "Propound"? "Laconic"?

I had to turn down the chance to go to Ängisbacka today because I haven't had time to get up and eat and stuff yet. :(

I had a disturbing mixture of anxiety nightmares and dreams about cuddling my sweet, sweet little dog. I guess having him sleep snuggled against my legs is good for something.

Batman is so brooding and grumpy and emo. Isn't it great? [livejournal.com profile] perhael and I had a total crack digression about Toni Braxton in regards to her wip yesterday that will show up in the deleted scenes when she's done unless we forget.

I'm still not writing as fast as I was before the writer's block set in last winter, but in a week or so I've managed over 8,000 words of the Batman piece I'm working on (although I'm not sure exactly how to write the end part still - the last third of plot perhaps). [livejournal.com profile] perhael and I have started writing in the chat window with the paragraph-for-a-paragraph method that [livejournal.com profile] southpaw526 and I first instituted five years ago (*waves* hi bb!) with our *cough* Richard Dean Anderson RPS. This method works well for us because it's motivating! And it's easier to keep going with the reward of a new paragraph to read dangling in front of you, contingent that you keep writing! And last night she totally broke Batman's little heart and he became even more emo, if that's possible. Auuuuuughhhh. It was my fault, too, because it was my plot suggestion! SRY BATMAN! ;_;

Not crazy about their video budget...
cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (batman)
I keep pimping this story to everyone and their mother, even if as far as I am aware they don't actually like slash, or Batman. And meanwhile I keep trying and sometimes succeeding to convert people to Batman/Gordon! So I thought I'd post a few recs here.

First of all, the current must-read, and I mean this for everyone, not just those already interested in the pairing:

The Clues in Front of Us by [livejournal.com profile] solaras is a post-TDK WIP. She's got six chapters up after, I suppose, two weeks or so. Her update rate is pretty good, is what I'm trying to say, so I consider this fairly safe as WIPs go (I generally avoid them when not DESPERATE FOR SOMETHING, ANYTHING TO READ). This story is Gordon's POV on his blossoming friendship with Batman and, at the same time, his friendship with Bruce Wayne, who seems to be seeking him out for political reasons. The summary seems to indicate that he's eventually going to start putting the pieces together. Now, the narrative voice is delicious perfection, ringing astoundingly true. The pace is exquisitely slow, the UST developing at an appropriately controlled speed. The atmosphere is nice. The dialogue is, at times, hilarious and fantastic. The parallels between the two story lines are very satisfying and neat, too.

Other recs:

First Priorities, by [livejournal.com profile] jen_in_japan, is Batman and Gordon gen and extremely short.

Getting Close, by [livejournal.com profile] jen_in_japan, an established-relationship piece saturated with angst and mood. Also very short and well-executed, although the flashback to the beginning of their relationship is a little bulky around the edges.

All Kinds of All Right by [livejournal.com profile] sua_lay is preslash focusing on Batman and Jim's son. There's awww, and some angst, but the implied things about Batman and Gordon's relationship are what stand out.

Dropping Masks by [livejournal.com profile] planetgal471 is a little longer than the others, and particularly the dialogue and the pivotal scene in the middle are remarkably good. The beginning and the end are both a little abrupt and seem slightly out of place, where an episode with Gordon's kids and some references to his divorce seem out of place in relation to what is otherwise a pretty specific (and cool) plot device. But that device is really cool.
cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (batman)
Oh, right, and I cleaned up and uploaded the two Bruce/Gordon pwps that I wrote in the Kink Meme, as well. These are quite unique from me! I usually never write pwps, but I thought the prompts would help me.

Being Realistic, ≈1000 words, explicit, for the prompt "Jim lets himself fantasize about getting fucked by Batman"; and Reveal, ≈1800 words, explicit, for the prompt "first time, identity reveal" (this is the one that I linked to in the meme the other day).
