WHAT IS THIS BULLSHIT Criminal Minds casting spoiler )

Criminal Minds has been host to a variety of kinds of fail in the past, most notably that horrific episode about the Roma, but it has generally done well on the misogyny front. I've greatly enjoyed CM's variety of different strong, complex female characters, plus one of the most realistic portrayals of women's professional clothing in a crime show (female FBI field agents and cops wear suits and uniforms on CM, not a parade of desperately boobalicious unprofessional shirts and wildly inappropriate heels)(NB: I would not ever like to have a discussion including rationalization or apologism for said sexualization of fictional professional women's dress). Apparently that's all at an end. If this spoiler comes to pass, I see a high probability of dropping it in a rage even though I love the whole cast.

Not that it's not usually also offensive - but how sad is it that US tv treatment of Vudun/Santaría is typically less offensive than its treatment of the Roma?

Too bad, too, because the special 200th ep of CSI had an awesome guest director and absolutely gorgeous camerawork. At least it was mostly limited to offensive exoticisation in the "scary primitive people doing tribal dances" scene, as opposed to suggesting that they, for example, kill white parents and steal their babies (thx, Criminal Minds, for giving everyone else something to live down to).

So, how about the Hotch/Rossi this week, huh?

It's really sweet the way they're gradually developing the trust and partnership between Hotch and Rossi canonically, although obviously, if you ignore my slash-goggled eroticised subversive reading, it's just an equally heart-warming platonic friendship. But that doesn't matter! Because they have their emotionally wounded Intense Discussions about Why We Do This and Don't Blame Yourself and You're A Good Man, their reserved manly handshakes and back-pats, their parental tete-a-tetes away from the big ears of the pitchers children. I like that in the Hotch-angst storylines and the Rossi-angst storylines, the other one is always sensitive to the nuances of the angster's behaviour even when the children aren't, and confident and caring enough to offer support verbally and with reassuring bodylanguage.

I need to go back to the beginning of the Rossi eps and rewatch at least the significant ones, because I didn't start shipping it until later and I'm sure that caused me to miss some nuances. Also I'd like screencaps. :/ I was chatting with [livejournal.com profile] iscaris about the canonical development of the pairing a few weeks ago (*wave*) and she brought up some stuff that I totally hadn't even remembered about it at all, and I can't allow that state to continue for a pairing I'm actively shipping: I won't know how to arrange my personal canon.

  1. I've been watching Dollhouse and enjoying the good dialogue and disliking all the usual targets for feminist critique, which is almost everything in this show; so the enjoyment is uncomfortable. Then there are plot-level problems and hating the "genius" character (whom I don't find remotely credible as a genius, even on the level that pseudoscience is used here, which is more or less the Stargate level) and every scene he appears in, pretty much. I like black Giles and, although I don't think she necessarily makes sense and (insert feminist critique here), I also enjoy Olivia Williams on a line-delivery level. But the last episode was better-written than the first two although not necessarily more problematic; and I think everyone is able to get into it a bit more here because at least Echo's character arc is really becoming more visible here, and we're finally starting to see some real movement in it. The first couple of eps were both devoted to setup, which was unfortunate; they really should have been put together in a single pilot, I think, because of the way they read like a single chapter.

  2. Speaking of feminist critique, how about Criminal Minds last week, huh? I mean, they've already failed so spectacularly this season with the Gypsies Steal Babies story that the It's Bad To Not Give Psychics In Law Enforcement A Fair Shake episode and its confused moral (Rossi was right all along but somehow his caution that was totally necessary was still assholey? What?) was not even a blip. But last week's spoilers )

  3. After the second-to-last episode of NCIS and the Gayness Spike where Read more... ) I was interested to see what would happen, how they'd transition back into the normal run of things since the show's crimefighting and Tony-as-comic-relief schtick can't really allow for that level of focus on Gibbs/Dinozzo to continue. Also, the next episode is really significant to any kind of episode tags - it shows the state of the interpersonal dynamic after any hypothetical Basement-Boat-Bow-Chicka-Wow scenes. If that makes sense. Well, the new episode has Tony's normal type of comic relief back in full force but was actually doing quite a bit to maintain the gay Read more... )

  4. There was no new Lie to Me this week, which is really sad. The show's showing great promise, even besides having Tim Roth: it's got multiple sub-plots that all show simultaneous movement, supporting actors who are interesting and not bad, entertaining plots of the week and law-enforcement shenanigans. I especially love the way everybody on the show is equally likely to turn into the Exposition Ho of the moment, and the way they tend to throw up their examples of people's Lying Body Language on big screen tvs and projectors and rewind them multiple times for our benefit... and then reinforce them with news clips of politicians and celebrities. They actually used "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" the other week. I really hope they don't get cancelled yet.

There was plenty of fodder for my currently favourite Criminal Minds OTP, Hotch/Rossi, in the new episode. Of course, that was because in the Metaphor of Best Fit, ie the crime-solving team as a nuclear family metaphor (try it! It basically fits all of the ones on TV. There are ALWAYS two 'adults' with a number of proteges!), right now Hotch and Rossi are the parents, so if one of them has an internal conflict storyline, the other one has to offer some support - not showing weakness in front of the children, right?

But one of the things I really love about CM this season (canonically and not subtextually/slash-gogglesedly speaking) is the careful and somewhat subtle portrayal of the friendship and mutual respect Hotch and Rossi already share, without making the development of that really central onscreen.

It was kind of a stroke of genius, from the point of view of interpersonal developments among members on the team, to have the replacement 'adult' character written in as an old colleague who had left in between, making him new to some characters and old to others. The quiet, coded conversations Hotch and Rossi share that hint at their pre-existing friendship, and the awkward, manly support they offer - it's sweet, and provides a more intriguing texture to the narrative than the whole 'tentative friendship-building' storyline that usually occurs when two characters are introduced for the first time. Also, I really, really loved that drinking-in-Rossi's(?)-office scene when Hotch needed comfort about his divorce.

The last two years I didn't have time to make Valentines for you guys, so I started a day early today and I drew these little cartoons by hand, which means they are of lesser, yet probably more amusing quality than the 2005 and 2006 Valentine's Day posts. I've at LAST finished transferring the entirety of my old recs site to delicious!

My delicious account - all fanworks (mostly fiction, but like... 2 vids in there!) - now contains 2 867 bookmarks!

Considering I started this project sometime last March, I think the occasion calls for celebration!

http://delicious.com/cimness : the main account!

Fandoms with over 50 bookmarks )

It's not exactly right to call this "recent" fandoms, but the ones I've been reading in the past year are

  • Batman, which is mostly Christopher Nolan's universe and mostly Batman/Gordon. I read a lot of that this fall. (26)

  • Bones. I think probably all of those are Brennan/Booth. (9)

  • Criminal Minds. I like Morgan/Garcia and Hotch/Rossi. I think I read some Hotch/Prentiss in there, too. (9)

  • DCU. I went through a phase of devouring Tim Drake/Kon-El stories this summer. (28)

  • Die Hard. McClane/Farrell exclusively, of course. (16)

  • Hot Fuzz. (11)

  • Ironman. Tony/Pepper, that is. I didn't read a lot of it before I got sick of the same things that always quickly enough drive me away from het. But rest assured, I did read it in all seriousness for a while - I just didn't find much that I liked enough to bookmark. (3)

  • Merlin. Haven't watched it, just read it. Fortunately, it seems a bit familiar. (21)

  • NCIS. I was reading this one, oh, a couple of months ago, until I ran out. I mean, I still give it a look when new pieces come up, of course, but the rate's not terribly fast... (51)

  • The Devil Wears Prada. I think a lot of us rediscovered the beauty of girl/girl this year (or, well, last year, but she's still writing it) thanks to Telanu's DWP fic.

I was hoping for more Hotch/Rossi in this week's Criminal Minds. I didn't really get any, but the first scene, at least, was pretty awesome. There wasn't much interpersonal development in this case, aside from Morgan giving Reid his brotherly advice; the rest was given over to Reid's internal storyline. Past instances of that on the show have come out really annoying, but I love Matthew Gray Gubler and his acting, and I also really dig his mom. So all in all, this was a plus. Also... lol, JJ is really pregnant. Come on, CM! More Hotch/Rossi!

In Bones non-news, I love Sweets THIS much. Less expectedly, I actually kind of like his girlfriend. Back to the non-news, the Hodgins/Angela storyline is staggeringly stupid right now.

I signed up for 11 fandoms for Yuletide and somehow forgot The Dark Knight. But I suppose it might possibly be just as well since I have more than ten thousand words of an unfinished TDK story on my harddrive already...

In retrospect it was probably correct to remove Criminal Minds from Yuletide - a glance at the newsletter will show you that it's quite active, but the problem is that it's not active with good fic. I've only read two or three pieces that I could even call decent, so every Yuletide always greatly increased the chances for something readable out there. The fandom used to be dominated by Gideon/Reid, which grossed me out because G. practically adopted him in canon, but at least I could see the logic for that. Recently, however, Hotch/Reid has outstripped Morgan/Garcia in popularity, and that just makes no sense at all. What makes even less sense is that by far the most popular pairing is Prentiss/JJ, which just... you know, ok, lesbian is good, but even before JJ's boyfriend, there was barely a few minutes of female bonding between the two of them - the entire rationale was apparently that they're cute and female! If anything JJ should have been slashed with Garcia, hello? And it's not like anyone who would slash JJ with Prentiss is susceptible enough to logic to consider Garcia's Mulder/Scully thing with Morgan. Which, you know, I haven't disinherited anyone for shipping Morgan/Reid either, and the fact that it's not all that popular helps with that, and also the fact that canon obviously doesn't intend to do anything with Morgan/Garcia except keep the UST at the same level for seasons and seasons and seasons without ever resolving it. I can't even say that's a bad decision on their part. Anyway, Morgan and Garcia are both obviously going to be hooking up with other people in that time, and while we as fans have access to the metatext, as long as we're going against it consciously there's nothing particularly wrong with going against it (which is why tinhat Harry/Hermione shippers are alarming, whereas reasonable people who are just like 'hey, H/H might have been a better choice because Ron is a moron' are... reasonable!). Of course, preferring Morgan/Reid to Morgan/Garcia is indicative of bad taste by my lights, but I don't have to read it, and I've known worse. Wax's mom serves two kinds of gross pickled fish things AND these disgusting jars of mutton rolled up with fat, like a big Twinkie of Evil and Animal Bits, at every single Christmas, and that's in a hundred times worse taste than Morgan/Reid.

I still think they should remove Sherlock Holmes from Yuletide too, though. I mean, the quality of Yuletide writing is generally higher, so it's good for me personally that it's there, but in all fairness, the lj community has been increasingly active the last couple of years and it's pretty steadily healthful at this point.

I've been craving pizza! with red wine! for like over a month, and yesterday we were supposed to go with [livejournal.com profile] shiroi_chi to Panini for lunch (my other favourite local restaurant), but it was way, way too completely full. We went to Ban Thai instead, and I had pad thai which is always tasty, but did NOT hit the spot. Also we met [livejournal.com profile] lovebashed and watched the first three episodes of s2 of The Sarah Connor Chronicles, plus the last ep of Criminal Minds (about CM x02... )). I needed to use up a metric ton of tiny baby apples from Ängisbacka, so I skimmed around online till I found a likely pie filling recipe and then I made an apple pie, the American As kind, in a cake pan, because Finnish pie pans are about 1 cm deep and that just wouldn't work. The 9" cake pan was actually slightly too small for the amount of filling I made, and squishing the crust into position went a bit oddly, but it tasted more or less the same (I suspect some slight difference in the makeup of the crusts they sell here, but not enough to be worth the bother of making my own). That bitch took a loooong time to cook! But it was very nice. I still want to go to Panini.

Apparently I wasn't alone in starting to want some Hotch/Rossi after that one episode last season, because I've gradually seen more and more cropping up in the fandom newsletter. Nothing to write home about - this fandom's big on short vignettes which are barely long enough to tell if it's good or bad - but in the future, who knows...?

I offered to write ficlets for anyone who pointed out an OTP I neglected to list the other day, and [livejournal.com profile] bluesbell, [livejournal.com profile] kegom and [livejournal.com profile] jain caught me out!

Criminal Minds' Morgan/Garcia for [livejournal.com profile] bluesbell: Vacation, smarm, ≈1900 words

Arashi's Ohmiya for [livejournal.com profile] kegom and [livejournal.com profile] aeslis: Stupid, slightly sexual but inexplicit, ≈1900 words

Arashi, Jun/Aiba, for [livejournal.com profile] jain: Happy Birthday To Me, sexual content, ≈1650 words. This one belongs to my Just Like verse, falling between Just LIke All Those Girls and Just One of the Boys.
cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (writing)
I'm going to try to make an exhaustive list of my OTPs (which I define as 'important ships which I read/ship', because occasionally I have two that overlap even if in general I refuse to break OTP and read the characters involved with anyone else). If I forget any of them, and you manage to remind me, I lose! And then, uh, I don't know, this seems like it should result in a drabble promise. I suck at short things, and I probably won't forget any anyway (I am forbidden from checking my recs page/delicious/tags/wip folders/etc!), but... what the hell. Drabbles, okay, drabbles of any pairing that I forgot.

I made this list without cheating! )

Look, that's headline worthy, okay? It's the first good Criminal Minds story I've seen in any sort of pairing I could remotely bring myself to read, let alone like. And because the world is mad there's still no good Morgan/Garcia, but I've come around to liking Hotch/Prentiss (in theory, that is) lately - and this one is just UST, which makes it less potentially problematic anyway.

Hidden Wounds by [livejournal.com profile] squeelated is pg and short, slightly non-canonical, Prentiss POV, tense and powerful. About as potentially disturbing as the show.
cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (goldfish crackers)
I can has femininity?

Wax was inspired to explore her girly side today by putting on this, like, ten-year-old pink jersey dress. It's knee-length. The cut's not bad, really, just the colour. "Why are you wearing that?" I said. "Because I feel like it," she declared, and then she sat down in her computer chair again. Okay? The colour is srsly unfortunate. That grey shirt alone sets off her peachy clear complexion to perfection, but the pink dress is sort of barf-like.

God, I miss goldfish crackers. (The icon made me think of it. I know it's a non-sequitur, but I love them more than M&M's, yet M&M's is what people always want to send us.)

We started to catch up on missed episodes of Criminal Minds last night. I can now say with conviction that Garcia and Morgan are not supposed to be having an off-screen relationship, just flirting a lot (""). And also that Greg (whatsisface?)(aka Hotch) unfortunately has a lot more chemistry with Prentiss (aka Paget Brewster) than with the woman playing his wife, Haley. Chemistry just can't be helped, but on the other hand, it has to help that he works with her all the time and doesn't see the wife actress that often. They're obviously trying. (Though God knows why - I've seen a bit of shipping that pairing around (Prentiss/Hotch obv.), and I would totally read it, set far enough in the future.) I also just say YES to the casting department. They've never set a foot wrong on this show - it's their greatest strength (well, it definitely wasn't going to be the writing).
