WHAT IS THIS BULLSHIT

The cast is both "mystified and disappointed", according to Thomas Gibson.
I'm flashing back to the now-infamous "Too many women on the bridge" that led to killing off Tasha Yar early in Star Trek. Because Tasha stationed there and Troi there sometimes is obviously too many women when you only have a permanent male bridge complement of Picard, Riker, Data, and Worf. Obviously. And, well, also to Majel Barrett's role in Star Trek being switched from First Officer to Nurse Chapel in response to basically the same complaint in 1964. How times have changed!
Criminal Minds has been host to a variety of kinds of fail in the past, most notably that horrific episode about the Roma, but it has generally done well on the misogyny front. I've greatly enjoyed CM's variety of different strong, complex female characters, plus one of the most realistic portrayals of women's professional clothing in a crime show (female FBI field agents and cops wear suits and uniforms on CM, not a parade of desperately boobalicious unprofessional shirts and wildly inappropriate heels)(NB: I would not ever like to have a discussion including rationalization or apologism for said sexualization of fictional professional women's dress). Apparently that's all at an end. If this spoiler comes to pass, I see a high probability of dropping it in a rage even though I love the whole cast.

The CBS show is shedding one cast member and possibly reducing the role of another. Both of them happen to be women. A.J. Cook is being let go, and Paget Brewster may not appear in every episode next season, although she'll still be a cast regular.
The moves are intended to "refresh a veteran drama series," a source close to the show tells Deadline.com. "Criminal Minds" may add a new female character later on next season to fill Cook's shoes.
