2021 in our household, in review
This was not a very eventful year, but losing a pet and gaining a pet are both major life milestones, so it's just as well to keep a record.
Not much. I started a work practice at the beginning of last summer, still continuing. I intend to apply for a job there soon, when my internship period or whatever it should be translated as runs out. Around the house our renovations are ongoing, but they did include a new sofa and some new curtains.
Our beloved cat, the BB (or Arwen), died in February. And we adopted Tristana, who is now one year old (she was born on Dec 28, 2020), in April.
We did SOME gardening. We finally purchased winter tires for our car.
I have not managed to follow through on finishing knitting WIPs.
My parents both got covid in 2021 when living in Alabama, after a lot of attempts from me and my sister to convince them to take isolation and masking more seriously. My dad is in a risk group because he's a quadriplegic wheelchair user, but particularly my mom is just completely incapable of conceptualizing risk in a realistic and percentages in a realistic manner. They both recovered, although my dad was in and out of the hospital for what felt like months, not all right away, but he had heart complications afterwards and had to have a pacemaker installed and all his other medications adjusted (he has a lot) as a result of that. And now, just after Christmas, they've all got breakthrough cases of Omicron even though they are all vaccinated, after none of them realizing that breakthroughs were a severe risk, or that people in general were recommending rapid testing before holiday visits, leading them to okay my BIL's mother flying in to visit them from Dallas without getting a test first, and her symptoms showed up by Christmas Eve which means she was already infected when she flew. So far none of them have severe symptoms, but everyone else in the house is too sick to find their pulse oximeters or any other blood oxygen measuring devices, so I'm not really confident that Daddy's is being checked often enough. My sister says they all just have cold-like symptoms.
Nobody in our immediate circle of acquaintance in Finland has been infected, although we're only a couple of degrees out from deaths. My immediate supervisor at work is one of 3(?) out of 17 workplace antivaxxers, so that's fun.
Also last week I got lumbago, or sudden acute lower back pain!, for the first time. Not fun at all.
Probably around Tristana. A kitten is very exciting.
What We Do in the Shadows s3.
I actually didn't see any movies that I loved, but I have enjoyed the cheesy 80s and 90s classics we've gone through. Esp. Top Gun, Robocop, Interview with the Vampire, and Blade.
Trial and Error by Anthony Berkeley, the parody/send-up/inversion of the golden age murder mystery. SUCH a fantastic time.
No new fandoms. Occasionally rereading, and occasionally checking up on Star Wars, The Witcher, and probably some others that I can't think of rn. I spent a lot of my time reading less well-known golden age murder mysteries (which was partly because I could find so little fannish to read) and a lot of time drawing (lettering, that is). I binge-watched a lot of QI over the summer and a lot of Only Connect over the last few months, but those can't be called fandoms - interests, perhaps.
Wax has just acquired a new (bad) fandom interest in the last couple of weeks, Roswell: New Mexico.
