I was scarred after my mom recommended I read "Mists of Avalon" when I was about eleven. After hearing a couple of Darkover-themed filks (mostly Leslie Fish's Horsetamer's Daughter) I'm also pretty certain I never need to read any of those.

She's horribly inconsistent, but some of her more mature Darkover ones were the first gay romances I ever read, and I am still quite fond of them. She can write angst rather well.

*ponders* I was named for Anne of Green Gables and I hate those books. I've always figured I was predestined to hate them, if only as one more way to annoy my mother.

yeah... me too. although i like, in theory, the idea of a pagan, feminist-centric take on the arthur legend.

I agree on the avalon stuff, which I consider to be pretentious pseudo-feminist crap. Some of the Darkover stories have great emotional resonance for me.

Have you read Gillian Bradshaw's Arthur trilogy? Makes me cry every time. Also the ones by Guy Gavriel Kay. All much more mature and beautiful than MZB.

(I was friends with Marion's daughter for a while, and she dated my brother. Poor fucked-up kid.)

well, i think my mother was mainly attracted by its feminist qualities and in general i consider her to be a good judge of such matters, if somewhat overzealous.

i am not a terribly huge fan of the arthur legend and have not actually read ANY guy gavriel kay.
