LJ is being weird.

utf-8 has nothing to do with it. It's a form of unicode, which stores almost all the characters used in modern writing for every language from English to Greek to Chinese to Klingon, 'cause programmers are geeks. It's a Good Thing in the long run. This educational moment inspired by an essay I read today.
