okay. pardon me while I THROW A FIT.

we know that already these people have put me off for two months before they would even decide to tell me the dates of the english language exams, because their OWN error had classified me as a swedish-speaking native.

then they told me about two weeks ago when the exams were. at that time the lady said, quote, 'i will send you the books you need to study tomorrow.' 'tomorrow' would have been a monday, i think.

so while my parents were watching the mail for books to arrive... she emailed me a week and a half later with the *titles* of the books and the publication information. EXPECTING ME TO GET THEM MYSELF. almost a week AFTER she said she was sending them.

so i found this out YESTERDAY when i went to email her about where the hell the books were. so i went to look up the books today...

both of them are out of print.

you read that right.

OUT OF PRINT. from 1991. the only sources i can find for them are IN ENGLAND, and *used,* and apparently *don't even offer next day shipping* which means that it's not even POSSIBLE to get them on time anyway. this is may second. the exam is *the nineteenth.* i have to leave the sixteenth.

i don't know if i have EVER been this pissed off before. ever.

i am ready to commit MASS MURDER.

That's incompetent morons in Finnish, btw, which these people obviously are. Sadly, I'm not surprised. I've been hearing bad things lately about how unorganized ÅA is from fellow students, and their website is a mess (always a sure sign for me that there's something wrong with the organization itself). There's also a fairly widely held belief (at least among Finnish speaking Finns) that ÅA doesn't pay much attention to people who don't speak Swedish as their mother's tongue. The way you've been treated certainly gives some credibility to that belief. You should have Wax napalm their asses!

it's not an exam on english. it's an exam IN english. it's an exam for the department of economics and political science; one of the books is ECONOMICS (which i've never taken) and one is modern political theory.

yeah. well, i was thinking that by going to aa i could learn some swedish, which would be easier than finnish, and is wax's native tongue, and what her family speak at home more or less. however, if this doesn't work out i will definitely give one of the more competent finnish universities a try. this is absolutely ridiculous. they clearly don't WANT to be put to any extraordinary trouble for students. i mean, they obviously don't want any students who need exceptions or anything that necessitates any work on their part. i'd hate to be one of these people or work there. they must be all slimy and black inside with bitchiness and burnout.

hah, yeah. i have been given to understand they don't actually teach econ in secondary school in finland though. wax thinks that most of the candidates won't have had it before.

i guess i knew they could in theory but in practice, like, WHOA. usually universities are trying to make money. it's like when you go in a store and they spit on you! but finnish universities AREN'T trying to make money, so you should think of them, i suppose, more like the department of motor vehicles. and THEN they make sense. god, this woman i've been dealing with is like a disaffected postal worker turned econ professor.

it's like my dad says, 'i've heard of people as [adjective] as you, but until now i've never actually met one.'

Well, TY (http://www.autu.fi) and HY (http://www.helsinki.fi/yliopisto/) (which is bilingual) are both much bigger, used to dealing with foreign students and generally thought to be good places for study. Some of the provincial places might be good as well, but I can't say for sure, since I haven't been paying any mind to them.

I've dealt with these people when I was thinking of studying Chemistry at ÅA (but later changed my mind and went for History at TY, instead), and they appear very nice. They just can't explain anything you in a way that makes any sense at all. I was enrolled there for two weeks, and I was confused the whole time as to what I was supposed to do and not do. And they weren't really of any help.
