The members of their private army are called spacemonkeys. However, the term 'spacemonkey' is older than that. (I think from when NASA sent apes into space to test shuttles?) At least Palahniuk didn't make it up.

i think there's a bit of NASA-talk between tyler and narrator about it. a spacemonkey was a monkey that went into space in an experimental way already, but maybe fc added the metaphorical pop culture meaning.
