i've been subject to anxiety! anxiety! anxiety! at fairly high levels for a couple of weeks now because classes start officially in a week, and today's the freshman orientation course, which i'm going to in under an hour even though i am no longer a freshman.  with luck, it will just be a couple hours' lecture in swedish and will happily answer all my questions.  i still haven't been able to find out what all the courses are worth--but there is so much inside my major concentration to take (sociology) that i don't have to take anything else this year except language (beginning finnish, level 3 swedish).

thus for weeks i've been avoiding trying to hash out a schedule by hanging out in #primenotprime, making tweaky revisions to my horribly long sga story (which is 2/3 through the *really* final beta and will probably be posted today or tomorrow), and reading random things on the internets like the letter from the church of the flying spaghetti monster to the kansas board of education (and i so want a pirates vs. global temperature mug). last night i finally gave in, with a little cheerleading from [livejournal.com profile] perhael, and made one.  it only took like an hour, after all that fuss.  who knew?  i've spent longer than that mocking a single badfic in my quest for endless procrastination.

in other news, the day before yesterday i decided to bake while wax was at work, and was given a super-easy coconut bread recipe by the fierce yet lovely [livejournal.com profile] isilya.  unfortunately, i spaced out on the self-rising part of the flour and forgot to add any rising agent to the dough at all, so what i ended up with is a sort of charming little coconut brick.  ("it's really very heavy," said wax, "you could bash someone's head in.")  of course, it still tastes good, it's just very... solid.  and kind of mysteriously rubbery, like coconut latex.  and then to add further to my cooking misadventures, yesterday at the store i accidentally bought a jar of olives with pits--which seem to be everywhere here like a plague!--because i couldn't read the finnish on the jar.  "i wonder if this finnish phrase means the olives have pits," said i.  "oh well--only one way to find out!"  they did.  i used them to cook anyway, but mostly their function in the dish is decorative since eating them is such a pain in the ass.

and then tonight i made french toast for the first time in ten years and accidentally made half a batch of french toast and half a batch of french pudding in a delicate shell of french charcoal.

Ooh la la!

K made pancakes for dinner a couple of nights ago and they turned out perfectly. Even the first ones, which I always undercook. Bastard!

wax hardly ever cooks so at least i don't have to worry about being upstaged.

also i make toll house cookies which every new acquaintance agrees are the food of the gods, the best cookies ever in the world, etc etc (even the acquaintances who CAN actually cook). so that makes me feel a little better!

I can make a reasonably good chocolate bourbon pecan pie, as long as I don't have to make the crust from scratch, because that always ends badly. My mom also has a problem with pie crusts. Once, she was crimping an edge that wasn't cooperating and she sighed and said, "When my mother used to make a pie crust, it would turn out looking just like a picture. My pie crusts look like the Picture of Dorian Gray," which pretty much sums it up, I think.
