cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (working)

this week on project catwalk (106, a sort of cross between s1 pr's "design a collection" and "vision") the designers ride in a bus by what someone says is wembley stadium.  they're in london, so this would be a big stadium.  the following exchange takes place between christopher (23, fucking genius) and matthew (20, not even graduated from fashion school):

matthew: what's the... what's the home... people.  the football people. that go there?
christopher: england.
matthew: does it?
christopher: ...yes.  are you for real?

i didn't know who did either--well, i didn't even know the name of the stadium, but then, i'm american--but still, this is hilarious.

did you know that in finland the fire department gets lots of false alarms about swans with their feet frozen to the street? and real alarms too of course.

It might be because of the bird virus that's going around over here, although I don't know if it has gotten as far as Finland. Here in Germany, people seem to be going completely crazy, bringing thousands of dead birds to the labs to be tested, or calling the police.

nothing to do with that that i know of. at least, the concern over frozen swans predates the bird flu scare by years--it's a permanent fixture here simply because swans frequently get frozen to streets and lakes and have to be rescued.

apparently!

swans get frozen to the street a lot, or to the water when they're sleeping in it and it freezes overnight, and it's the fire department's job to rescue them! and i guess people are um, very conscientious about calling it in. finland is a largely rural country. and the swan is the national bird, so i suppose they're fairly common.

Oh, okay. I don't know whether to be amused - Swans! Frozen to the street! - or feel sorry for the poor things. It probably sucks to be a waterbird in Finland.

think of the poor firefighters when a lake freezes overnight and traps them. they have to go out on rubber boats over the new ice to pour hot water on the feet of angry swans!

...i admit this image keeps making me crack up.
