Japanese has a lot of bizarre names for foreign cities/countries, etc., too. Some are based on mispronunciations, like Mekishiko for Mexico. Obviously they took the name from English or the written name, and tried to approximate it in Japanese. But if they'd only gone by the Spanish pronunciation, using an h, it would be 100% correctly pronouncable in Japanese as Mehiko.

Then there are some like Igirisu for England which is just not anything like it at all. Phonetically it should be Ingurando, so wtf Japanese people?
