i remember that! when i was in high school i was studying japanese from this adorable little old japanese lady at the university's japan culture and information center, but she could never answer questions like that.

maybe their word for "england" is a japanisation of the dutch or portuguese words for england instead of the english one?

but then, i remember thinking that they seem to change loanwords occasionally in unexpected ways.
