cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (ferrero rocher)

i didn't really realise how much more important easter is here than in america. (having grown up atheist/unitarian universalist, however, i may have a slightly skewed understanding of this.) but anyway, they have easter witches trick-or-treating on several different days, which i understand vary depending on which part of the country you're in. also, extra days off work (and the whole week off finnish class!) and several related holidays. yesterday was one of these, which i also didn't notice.

i went to wax's brother's house for a family party and i didn't actually realise until we got there that it was for easter. they had norwegian easter witch figures hanging from the ceiling, a feathered easter tree and a bunch of egg- and chicken-related easter decorations; a big meal followed by two traditional sweets, memma (a kind of carmelized goo made from rye dough which you eat with cream and sugar) and pasha (a fluffy white creamy moulded puddingish thing with bts of fruit in it); and oodles of family togetherness punctuated with terrifying amounts of chocolate.

also, the traditional easter candy i've usually gotten is kind of bad (although i love easter m&m's)--especially the traditional chocolate. but here the mini chocolate eggs alone could be my death. while we were playing board games they upended a whole bag of these in a bowl and i bit into one and--i don't even know if it's fazer, finland's stellar native chocolate brand, but it tasted like it--rich, smooth, creamy, a hint of hazelnut. i ate way too many of those, a kinderegg, and a handful of pieces of guylian.

and i experienced my first ever game of trilingual pictionary. leena, my soon-to-be sister-in-not-law, is a finnish speaker, so two of the teams we played with had to get up and check the internet for the english/finnish equivalents of words almost every turn, and the guessing was multilingual too. it's odd that my homesickness for my own family is in a way satisfied by borrowing wax's--they're a really great family of course, but i wouldn't necessarily have expected that.
