cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (working)
there's a little stack of rusty, dirty bottlecaps on the bathroom counter, because my sister is collecting them (daddy! i already have six!).

it reached around ninety today and yesterday. i'm unaccustomed, apparently, or undernourished, because it left me lying mostly-asleep on the couch or floor or wherever i happened to be, mostly unable to move.

also, my dad has referred me to someone who wants a graphic of a dead canary (reasons unclear). and this sf magazine seems to spend half its reviews on garbage like movie novelizations and star wars and buffy tie-ins, and dragonlance.

and on the christopher lloyd show today, his crew were dressed in scrubs and blue paper gowns, and one of them was constantly in the background chatting up first a girl and then a guy who 'thought he was a doctor.' [livejournal.com profile] nemoricultrix, i'm sorry i doubted you. (CL: you're icelandic? how cool is that? icelandic woman: it's pretty cool.)

the study abroad advisor has been really nice through this whole thing. if you could review colleges, he'd be one of maybe three things about amherst that got any good marks. the deadlines are pretty much past for the fall everywhere, but he's helping me look into denmark and sweden as 'other scandinavian places.' how much simpler would this be if not for the necessity of lying? (don't worry, i don't feel *guilty*, just faintly regretful about the effort involved. that's me, black to the core!) living with ze parents is miserable as i'm sure pretty much everyone i know can agree from their own personal experience; however, it's free (or better than, since they keep buying me things too). and this way i will be able to go to [livejournal.com profile] hollsk's wedding.

[livejournal.com profile] nemoricultrix, i am crazy. i spelled it wrong. christopher lowell.

finished dune yesterday morning. whoa. got out dune messiah but i haven't started it. i was going to make a carrot cake instead. and then i fell asleep. anyway, there's what i consider a... not un-justified but really very baffling comparison with tolkien on the back cover. because, i mean, they're both richly imagined, and they're both adventure fantasy, i suppose. but i think that's deceptive; they're not the same kind of thing at all. dune was is an invented myth; LOTR is an invented history made on an armature of real myths. that may be sophistry. it's my current best shot at explaining. but you can read them and see how very different the feeling of each is. (and while dune is very thorough, i doubt the world is built as thoroughly as middle-earth, whatever the reviewer may say, and not to insult herbert's impressive skill in the least. the novels are only the tiniest fraction of the world-building tolkien did and, i think, not even essential to it. the world was far more important to him.)
