Mayday Eve Report
1 May 2005 04:53 pmso, we decided to take perry to vappen, the swedish-finn mayday celebration. i've never observed perry to have a big problem with crowds before--see, we did think about it beforehand!--so we walked into town and up vårdberg hill. the deal is that thousands of swedish finns and some of their kids stand around for a while, the åbo akademi choir sings, some announcer says "students, put on your hats!" and then all six thousand of them put on their identical finnish graduation hats, and then everybody drinks and mills around meeting people and trying to get invited to parties.
well, perry didn't like the crowd. after a couple of minutes of edging between people to get close enough to see the choir, he was shaking. so then i got to stand with him in a relatively empty place for like half an hour or so while my hands and ears gradually became numb with cold. even though it wasn't far away, the crowd (six thousand or so?) was noisy enough that i couldn't properly hear the choir. poor perry didn't stop shaking the whole time. wax went off to find her brother for an extended period. they came over, he left again, and we started home a few minutes early.
then we had a party. thanks to everybody who came. it was very nicely festive. and i had about ten minutes of nausea this morning, which i guess counts as my first hangover ever. which is odd because i think i had more total alcohol that one time at sugar's place, with the pepsi-kahlua combination that we don't like to talk about. maybe the fizzy wine made the difference. oh, and then we slept thirteen hours.
