cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (lazy)
today i met [livejournal.com profile] shiroi_chi to go to town and the post office and the place where she could buy her theatre tickets, and to consume a chevre sandwich that was seriously the size of a small birthday cake. not a slice of birthday cake - an entire birthday cake. it was necessary to cut it both lengthwise and crosswise, and then to tip the bits over (they were about six inches high) and cut them again. well, okay, maybe it was the size of a quarter of a birthday cake. in fact, though, it was taller than many birthday cakes i've eaten in the past.

we went to this rather tacky little shop full of "light fixtures" made out of mardi gras beads with places for tea lights, but no place for any light bulbs, and chinese wooden chests in bold colours, and polka-dotted toasters, and €112 patchwork teal floral velvet quilts and the like. also, a lot of those greeting cards and refridgerator magnets featuring classic 50s art of women with "subversive" captions about how the woman in question likes shopping, will sleep with men for money, and does not clean houses. it's the kind of sentiment you get from the bad kind of romantic comedies, and from the kind of women's magazines that fill me with loathing, and from jokes forwarded to me by my aunts and cousins. chi and i agreed that they make both of us uncomfortable, which was a source of great satisfaction to me, especially as she is the only member of my immediately available circle who also, like me, likes romantic comedies (it's thanks to her that i have both clueless and at last, indirectly, legally blonde as well! ♥ and while i was buying the latter she bought earth girls are easy, which is one of my favourite films from my childhood). (although the feminism portion of the title should not be attributed to chi, who testifies that the reason she hates keira knightley is "because she's a girl".)

i have been scarce lately. reasons for this include:

  • christmas shopping almost finished (remaining: 1 item)

  • christmas wrapping almost finished

  • christmas mail-related things almost finished (remaining: 1 pkg)

  • falling in love with a new pattern of finlayson textiles

  • craft projects

  • testing and perfecting a highly satisfactory recipe for baked orange chicken breasts

  • re-reading emma, and thinking wistfully about why nobody seems to have it on dvd in town
