cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (Default)

A neurotic avoidant dependent socially anxious geek with a family history of murder, suicide, hypochondria, cancer, and chronic depression walks into a bar with a depressed socially awkward seasonally affective artist with anger management issues and a family history of OCD, alcoholism, and osteoporosis.

Why do they think it's a good idea to reproduce?

My mom and I have actually had conversations about this, even though my parents' situation is a little different because my dad is actually quite stable. She thinks it's a generation thing- in their day, choosing not to have children because of genetic issues wasn't something that even crossed people's minds. Mental disorders weren't something you talked about, and the genetic aspect was less universally known. I mean, you and I have access to all kinds of information on the internet, we know exactly how our disorders work. Plus, I think choosing not to have children was still a pretty radical thing back in the day. There was a lot more pressure to 'be normal'.

Me, I think I'm going to do the sensible thing and not reproduce, ever.

Because the initial act produced such an amazingly beautiful result. Sean and Liam are amazing kids, and I can't imagine them not being in your life.

I think anyone who knew you could tell you'd make a wonderful mother! Although that makes me sympathise with my parents too, because I'm sure they didn't realise how much genetic baggage they were putting me at risk of, like Lilah says.

Thank you! Rest assured that my bafflement is tinged with ironic amusement and not misery.

On reflection I'm sure you're right about that! I just wish they'd thought of it anyway, sometimes. It's actually amusing when you consider the ways in which the deck is stacked against me. When I emailed my Dad about DPD he was like "oh yeah, I'm pretty sure I was like that for years and years, and it only started to get better after I'd been married to your mother for a long time." WELL THANKS DAD. But then he apologised in case he had contributed to passing it on to me via nurture (he didn't realise it's mainly genetic), which was so cute that I had to forgive him.

:(

I get by due to thinking about the day I can turn around to the parents and go, "Despite all the utter crap you passed on to me via genes and (non-)nurturing, I have turned out better than you both. So there."

It will be a good day.

*hugs* <3

I can't imagine them not being around, either. They're my life.

I just SO hope they don't become bipolar.

Yeah, it's not something you really think of at the time, but afterwards...it comes up in your own mind, or it did for me anyway.

PS. On Sunday I'll be moving to our new Batcave almost next door to your place, and as we'll be without internet access for most of June I thought I'd ask if it'd be okay for me to come over to your place once or twice a week to check my email? I'm waiting for some exam book availability notifications and stuff. Man, I'd forgotten how complicated life is without the internets. :(

...just as I suspected, LJ only lets me post short comments. So you don't get to hear our complete family health history, more's the pity. XD

My boyfriend has near-crippling social anxiety, OCD, and chronic gastrointestinal problems. I strongly suspect that he has an attention deficit disorder. I also strongly suspect that he was bulemic as a young teenager. That being said, I can't wait to spawn with him anyway.

And I mean, as cheesy as it is, if they hadn't reproduced, you wouldn't exist, and I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people out there who enjoy your existence.

That is a heartening thought! Due to me, my mom actually has medication for her depression and OCD now, too, which is good.
