26 Jun 2002 11:30 ammet connie willis--the toastmaster at deepsouthcon--and got two of her books, including the new passage. as i said to my mother, i admire it "not unreservedly"--though it is very, very good. the flow towards the end is too different. it didn't feel quite right. then again, her plot-based writing is magnificent, and sparklingly witty and such. reading real novels again is so luxurious. most fanfiction just can't stand up to the comparison.
speaking of which, i'm now determined to see aotc. at the memphis in (2004?) room party, connie was talking about it, specifically as a source for pickup lines: "i don't like sand. sand is hard, and rough. not like you. yoooouuuu're soooooooft." she said to me, "would YOU fall for that?" (it depends, of course, on whether the future evil overlord in question has a pervy hobbit fancier t-shirt to offer me, and so i told her).
