cimorenethis episode wants us to think it's deep, so it has a Very Serious Closer. first of all you have to understand that during the episode

now SPOCK and MCCOY are hanging about on the bridge when KIRK walks on like a zombie. he sits in his chair slowly and a little creakily, as if he's just run an unaccustomed few miles and is now regretting it.
he stares angstily into space.
MCCOY: it's hard to believe that a man could die of loneliness.
KIRK: not when you've sat in that room.
there's an awkward little silence. KIRK looks over and sees SPOCK watching him with a distressed frown.
as soon as he looks at spock, he smiles.
KIRK, smiling: take us out of orbit, mr spock. ahead warp factor 1.
as soon as KIRK starts talking SPOCK begins to smile quite warmly back at him.
SPOCK: acknowleged, captain. warp factor 1.
and this has nothing to do with kirk or spock, but this episode has one of my favourite guest stars. she looks like jennifer garner and plays a spunky psychologist who keeps arguing with kirk.
and a bonus from the very beginning of the episode.

Also Miss Kinda-Looks-Like-Jennifer-Garner is so beautifully angsty-looking. All pouty pout and puzzled eyebrows.
