cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (smile)

I've been waiting for Suede to be out the whole season because I can't stand his referring to himself in the third person, but I've changed my mind in the last few weeks. I want to flush Kenley's head every time she insists that she knows better than everyone else and doesn't want to lower herself to listen to Tim! And she's such a spoiled, bitchy little brat. Quit with the rudeness and the eyerolling and the whiny excuses, seriously! I really felt for Suede. And I think Kenley's been stronger than him overall, maybe, but she deserved to leave this week. Suede wasn't stellar, but he's more versatile. She really can't make anything but Jackie O, pinups and garden-party dresses, and nothing that wouldn't be worn by Mary Tyler Moore. Mary would've been delighted with her "hip hop" outfit if she could do her own hair and makeup and jewelry - and in her own hair, makeup and jewelry, you'd never have known it was supposed to be anything like hip-hop. I actually got embarrassed with how LL Cool J was trying to be nice to her about it...

Man, I had to explain the entire concept of Project Runway to people, and then explain this week's challenge, and then recreate Leanne's runway walk, and describe the "hip hop" outfit she did it in, just so I could tell them that the guest judge was LL Cool J. !!!

Re. Suede: I think he's been referring to himself in 3rd person less lately, because I have not been irritated by it as often, but maybe I'm just becoming used to it. It's like visiting the monkey house, I guess. In much the same way, I became so used to it that I almost found Blayne's tanning addiction merely "quirky" by the end.

Yes, and I think he had faded because he wasn't allowed to go tanning! Thank Enya. Because he looked so offputtingly ORANGE at first.

And LOL, LL Cool J was so *nice* about it and... ahhahah his FACE.

I was SO hoping Kenley would go home this week. They can't let her go to Bryant Park. They just can't.

I like Leanne and Korto.

Oh god, I just watched earlier today, and I do NOT understand why Kenley didn't go home. "I could do it if I had more than one day," she says? Well then, I guess that means she's not up for the challenge or the pressures?

And god, the snot in her voice when people are critiquing her. I don't know if you watched the preview, but the way she says Heidi's name in the next episode is just vomit-worthy.

She can't listen to anyone! "I never change anything for Tim. What does he know about hip-hop anyway?" OMFG, has she not learned anything from watching past seasons of Runway? Being stuck up and single-minded is NOT going to do anyone any favors.

Plus she blamed Leanne for not selling her look on the Runway? lakjdflajsdf;alskdfja.

RGGGHH. I was so pissed they didn't send her home. I liked Suede--the third person thing didn't ever really bother me so much, and I found his commentary amusing to watch. And he was really gracious about things, too.

If she's not out after next episode, omfg--I do NOT want her in Bryant Park.

I love Korto, and I like Leanne and Jerrell a lot, but I was really surprised with them keeping Kenley after how abysmal her dress was this week. Her efforts have been really bad the last few weeks as I recall, definitely not in line with her inflated ego and her nastiness to the other designers. She's just been lucky someone else sucked more each time, but this time? I mean, the crotch alone, not to mention how she completely missed ANY PART of the brief, was far worse than Suede's. The only way in which it could conceivably be better was that it was more eye-catching.

Probably the fb from the producers or the evaluation of her portfolio as a whole - they never show it on-screen but they do consider that as well during eliminations, and I think it's possible that her portfolio as a whole is more interesting/stronger.

Although Suede wasn't always gracious. His comment about Leanne choosing the model that had been his when her name was drawn was just ridiculous. It's happened tons of times on the show that people take new models, and it's a competition! Get over it - he was the one being childish.

Heh. Kenley would need a miracle to make the final three, unless they pick her for drama (what a BITCH). I'm pleased with Leanne, after her poor start; hometown girl makes good, even if I still don't think she's in the same league as the other two. Final 3: Jorell, Kurto, Leanne.

Though I must say, I was thinking about it, and the whole concept of hip-hop fashion for women is a really difficult one. There are about ten well-known female emcees, and if you're actually looking for hip-hop as opposed to R&B, that's a tiny field. And most of them dress TERRIBLY.

Lady Sovereign (http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h84/shane1229/lady-sovereign.jpg)
MIA (http://blogs.villagevoice.com/statusainthood/mia.jpg)

Or unexceptionally - nothing that reads "hip hop"

Lauryn Hill (http://images.fanpop.com/images/image_uploads/Lauryn-Hill-lauryn-hill-60421_1024_768.jpg)
Queen Latifah (http://images.askmen.com/galleries/singer/queen-latifah/pictures/queen-latifah-picture-2.jpg)

R&B style for women reads closer to pop, with a side of glamour, and Leanne couldn't have pulled it off on the runwayt anyway because it's so dependent on the women being top-heavy.

I mean, seriously - what SHOULD she have done? I hate her and her attitude and her outfit was FUGLY, but.

I agree 100%! Fine, Suede's outfit wasn't "turned up" and looked kind of like Jerrell's regular style, but it was well made and fit with the theme and fit him well. Leanne looked RIDIUCLOUS.

I thought Kenley should have gone home for her astrological sign dress. That purple concoction was terrible.

I would have at least not done skinny high-waisted pants. Some kind of boyfriend style pants would have been better.

No. She didn't do any layers for the Diane von Furstenberg challenge.

I love Korto - that seatbelt coat/dress she made was beautiful.

What about female rappers like Da Brat, or hip-pop like TLC? Or what about, say, Eve and Lil' Kim? The line between hip-hop and r&b is fuzzy, anyway, admitting plenty of crossover, and they tend to share a radio station. I'd say that, if you're not going to admit oversized tracksuits like those favoured by Missy Elliot, that leaves metallics, short or long clingy skirts, big pimpin' furs and fedoras/menswear elements, velour, leather, satin, and spangles. Sure, a lot of this fashion is intended for full-figured women and for showing off breasts, but it's not like it's never worn by thin girls, either. Eve's practically flat-chested. Hip-hop dominated pop fashion circa 2000 at J-Lo's heyday with "I'm Real" through Christina Aguilera's "Can't Hold Us Down" and Destiny's Child's "Survivor".

Just an image search for "Eve" gives a lot:

Yeah - low-rise, maybe wide or flared, maybe white. She looked indie and kind of mod-emo, not remotely hip-hop or r&b.

Point! I forget about mainstream hiphop because I'm not a fan, and I loathe R&B, and too much of it crosses over. She definitely could have done something awesome with metallics, animal prints, & fur.
