My parents live on the corner of two busy streets and my mom let my little sister's dog outside off a leash, against my sister's policy and directions. Mom liked that the dog would often come when called and could understand commands like 'don't leave the yard' (my dog doesn't, and wouldn't). She thought it was smart enough.
This time my sister's dog wasn't smart enough. She ran into the street and got hit by a car and now she's dead. She was only about five years old. My sister's obviously really upset. It's not a personal loss for me - I only met the dog once - but I always freak out when dogs die on tv, for example. I can't even comprehend the horror.
