cimorene: cartoony drawing of a woman's head in profile giving dubious side-eye (whatever)

"isn't it sweeet?"
"maybe someday the whole WORLD can become as accustomed to inappropriate public displays of affection as the members of arashi are!"

aiba has some kind of strange affinity with root vegetables. phallic ones. although whether that's actually what he's talking about here...

"actually it was more like THIS big, thankyouverymuch."

aiba and jun as co-hosts are brilliant. although not as brilliant as aiba the magician cutting in half jun in a bunny suit would be. (i'm just saying.)

also, aiba is pretty.

jun starts the aiba-baachan episode rolling his eyes at aiba's dorky bounciness, which is a bit much to put up with on top of the snow...

...but he only holds out for about three seconds.

"usually we divide up all the work and one person goes with the grandpa and does all the tough work like moving logs and feeding large vicious birds in the snow and wading through the mud, while one stays in the house with the baachan and cooks and bonds and, if he's nino, naps for half the day! right, matsujun?"

"right, well, in that case i'll go start lunch and aiba can go with grandpa."

(not so fast! says aiba!)

(plz note: this dialogue is made up but it is more or less the gist of the scene)

"but it's COLD out!" says jun. he's kind of a princess. ♥

the thing about this grandpa is that he's a widower, so instead of helping grandma, aiba gets to cook and clean by himself. and he, uh, dresses up. as a grandma. in a wig. and spends the day dusting and getting misty-eyed over the poor dead grandma and lonely grandpa, and also cooking. jun spends a lot of the day making faces like this.

also when aiba comes outside to ask grandpa what he should put in the lunch - still dressed in his floral granny coveralls and ruffly pink bib and grey wig - jun makes a face much more like this: "XD!"

"there's something weird over there," says jun, glimpsing aiba through the fence, and goes over to him making this XD face, and by the time he gets there can hardly choke out words instead of cracking up. "you adorable idiot, what the hell are you doing?" says jun.

then grandpa gives aiba a single ostrich egg to make lunch from and aiba's like "um... okay."

"make me something good!" says jun sternly.

"um... yeah," says aiba brightly. "i get it!"

"no," says jun, "but do you really get it?"

"yeah!" aiba chirps, "i get it! it's fine, it's fine!" - and turns around to leave and immediately makes a ":?" face.

the scene with him trying to open the ostrich egg with sandpaper, a saw, and finally a hammer is one of the most beautiful things to ever grace a mago episode.

meanwhile, jiichan removes a baby ostrich from its cage and deposits it in jun's hands. jun isn't happy about this.

"just because i'm a boyband member doesn't mean i like baby animals," jun thinks.

behold the aiba baachan outfit.

this is from the group meeting scene taped afterward, when they're reporting their activities to ohno, nino, and sho. jun has not quite lost the "what is the matter with you, you adorable idiot?" attitude.

sidenote: nino caressing ohno's leg with his foot.

in the dinner scene at the end, jun makes his appearance in a lavender tshirt and a purple leather bomber jacket, with sparkly vamp red on his fingernails.

oh, jun, you can wear lavender at me any time.

Whenever you post these things it always makes me nostalgic for all the variety shows I used to watch with SMAP and Tokio and Kinki Kids and V6 and Johnny's Jrs. If only I'd saved my tapes, I bet I'd have some old Jrs. skits with these guys when they were wee.

oh, i'd love that! i've seen baby pictures of aiba, jun and nino, who were all in heavy circulation in the tokyo jrs before they were placed in arashi.

Sho and Ohno were, too.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure I threw away all my variety tapes. I do have a lot of old Music Stations and such where you can see them all dancing backup, and I have boxes of teen magazines from like 96-98. I should go look in the garage for those this weekend. I've been meaning to get them out and see if I can see them anyway (sadly a lot of them have pages cut out, so I'm sure I won't get a ton of money for them).

ah, i haven't seen many pre-arashi pictures of sho or ohno, and i was told that was because they weren't used in the same groups and/or ohno was in osaka (?) or something.

Yeah, and Sho and Ohno are older, so they weren't with the young'uns. MatsuJun, Nino, and Aiba joined when I was at the end of my Johnny's obsession. (At the height, I was buying Potato, Duet, Wink, and Myojo every month, and often An An and Junon as well. O_o) Now I have to get them out of the garage! I will do so either this afternoon or Sunday.

Well, I looked in the stack of clippings I still have in the house (it's 6am here, so I'm not going out to the garage yet) and found quite a lot of Sho and one of Aiba/Nino. Also a lot of Tackey and Tsubasa, so I'm scanning them, too, and will find some comm to post to.

Also loads of cute juniors who dropped out and were never heard from again. *sigh*

No Ohno, cause I always thought he was fug, and thus did not cut out any pics of him.

Hahahaha, and by Jin I mean "Jun." (Which I typed right the first time but then LJ wouldn't let me post, and, hahaha, you see the result of my distraction.) Clearly I have KAT-TUN on my mind. We ship rival boybands!!!!! WHAT WILL WE DO, CIM!!! WHAT WILL BECOME OF OUR LOVE? :D

i don't know! i already am starting to hate you! it's as insidious as the tide! or as love for a new fandom! i'm already starting to have flashbacks to despising bsb slash from the lofty position of nsync fandom.
