ohno is so wee and conveniently travel-sized.

crack sci-fi pet idea: when nino's parents go on a long trip to--jupiter, maybe, they buy nino a Pet Person to keep him company, which are like, incubated people grown extremely fast and to order. nino's parents think, well, nino would like someone around who appreciates art, and food, and can spend a lot of time sleeping--, not realizing that they are setting up nino with someone who will have to be taken care of rather than the other way around. there would be many scenes of frustration with nino needing to teach ohno how to do things, and calling up the company ("we have a strict non-return policy," and nino says, "but he's clearly defective, he barely knows how to boil water," and after getting off the phone, realizes that ohno had overheard, and later on ohno will have some clear internal struggle because he doesn't want to bother nino, who in all this time has come to be so very fond of ohno but ohno doesn't realize it, but he doesn't want nino to be stuck with ohno since he's so useless, and there can be angst and comforting, etc etc), and like. maybe ohno doesn't know how to use the bath properly, or get into the shower fully dressed the very first time, or something.

um. yes. i like it when ohno needs to be taken care of. XD i also like it when he takes care of other people, of course. (you've surely noted that there is, for all practical purposes, nothing about ohno that i don't like.)

i doubt it's possible to genetically program people to know how to work a shower. maybe they can be retrained with those ... brain interfaces with the goggles and stuff where you learn a language in two hours. or something. like VR. and that is the part that didn't work. maybe ohno was allergic. or he just fell asleep... that's actually funnier. but wait, jupiter? why are nino's parents spacefaring?

but also the whole... liking him but trying to return him and clone thing... has like at least a novel's worth of moral and ethical issues and possibly allegorical things.

oh, i was assuming that it would be more, like, subconscious programming and stuff, like in demolition man where prisoners are kepts in cryogenic freezing and subconsciously trained to do productive things so they won't do crime (like knitting).

the parents have to be going far away, far enough away that they would be worried about their son getting lonely, and i thought jupiter sounded pretty good. XD and then, who knows, maybe ohno and nino will have an adventure trying to track them down after there's been no word for ages (and communication had been improved! for a while nino had been getting messages from them every month).

there are a lot of possibilities!

but also the whole... liking him but trying to return him and clone thing... has like at least a novel's worth of moral and ethical issues and possibly allegorical things.

1. i think ohno is less a clone and more a tank, like from space above and beyond, an invitro--they're gestated at a super-fast rate and are born at the physical age of twenty, etc etc, and they are all made from various genetic material (like, i'm sure it was donated or some how artificially made).

2. i suppose it does! i was just going to be lazy and imply that nino was a rude and bratty child; possibly the company has very strict contract that must be signed off on that involves promising to love & cherish (well, not really, but do you get the idea?) but of course it wasn't nino who ordered ohno so he would feel gipped, like, if he were very spoiled.

or he just likes to complain, and what he really wanted was them to fix ohno or make it up to him, it's not like he'd really have given him back.

but he doesn't realise at first that ohno heard him and then he doesn't understand why ohno's feelings would be hurt, but maybe ohno burns his hand trying to figure out how to cook and nino fusses over him and puts him in the kitchen chair with some ice while he cooks, and starts muttering darkly -

"what if i didn't know how to cook?" he says, cracking a second egg into the pan with one flick of his wrist, dropping the shells in the compost compactor. "i mean they didn't know. lots of people can't. what if i didn't want to cook for you? you're supposed to know how to cook, this is a big deal! you could starve, we both could, we'd be here eating - pickles and ramen if i couldn't cook! aren't they supposed to check that somehow? they must have done something wrong, obviously, what if they did something else to you?"

and ohno feels a little uncertain, but like maybe nino isn't mad at him, at least, and while his hand is burnt he can't doodle, which was what he was doing that he really wanted to do that he picked himself, or play cards, or video games - and maybe he watches nino play for a bit but then nino feels sorry for him because of his hand and they curl up on the couch and watch movies.

then nino's saying sleepily over the movie, with his head tipped back on the back of the couch, both of them under a throw blanket, "how long have you been here, anyway, a week? i can't even keep track of the days, it's been so busy with you here. i guess they won't have to worry about me getting lonely anyway."

omg *.*

(maybe there was a mix-up with ohno, though, like, ohno was trained--in the subconscious training, that is--to be pretty specialized and he was supposed to be for particular purposes: dancing, art, etc etc. like they were trying a new program of subconscious teaching to see, as an experiment, if they could make people who were geniuses at certain things?)

öalksjfdöj. XD maybe some mad scientist was trying out his pet project elsewhere and somehow the programs got mixed up! so it was totally still experimental and certainly not meant to be the only thing they got! because he barely got beyond the basic social skills, just a tiny short cycle of them and they they hadn't finished integrating that into the specialisation program!

*_* maybe ohno falls in love with nino and since he has no social skills, he realises neither that you might say anything nor that there would be any reason not to, so it comes up in a really bizarre way in passing after a little while, and nino thinks at first that it's another way his programming was messed up.

"you've probably imprinted," says nino, his eyebrows wrinkling in exasperation. "great." he keeps petting ohno's elbow reassuringly.

"imprinted...?" says ohno.

"you know, like a duckling," says nino impatiently. "you're not a duckling."

"no," says ohno. nino is still frowning, he looks genuinely upset by the problem; so ohno offers, "i don't think i imprinted," hoping it will make him feel better.

"of course you wouldn't think so," nino grumbles, but he steals a look up at ohno hopefully beneath his lashes.

"well, it wasn't right away, and - it can't be like that for ducklings," says ohno uncertainly. it's hard to explain his feeling of knowing.

nino sighs and flops down on his back on the floor next to the game controller, flinging an arm over his eyes. "they weren't exactly helpful about fixing you when you couldn't cook." ohno shakes his head in agreement, but of course nino can't see that with his eyes covered. "how do you fix that anyway? i don't know," he says. "and if i gave you back to them to fix they'd probably just do something else awful to you anyway." he's gotten more resentful on ohno's behalf in the past couple of days as he's changed the bandages on ohno's palm and cooked without help more and more times.

ohno moves around the corner of the table and crouches next to him. when nino moves his arm off his face, he looks directly into ohno's eyes right away, but he doesn't seem surprised to see ohno there.

"n - " ohno says. "it wasn't imprinting. i wasn't imprinted."

nino stares at him for a second. then he says slowly, "how do you know?"

"i know," ohno says.

there's a silence. nino looks at ohno like there is something confusing and interesting written in his face. ohno doesn't move. he's not even sure he breathes.

"okay," says nino.

!!!! you keep writing this and it is killing me, cim. dead in the most excellent of ways, the one where ohno just knows he's not imprinted because it couldn't be that way for ducks, omg.

no, really. ♥ ♥ ♥ if i gave you more detail-snippets would you keep writing things out? omg!
