You're right, I was thinking of An Infamous Army! I believe it was a conversation with my always-disorganized mother which did the mischief. False Colours seems to be related to April Lady instead.

However, I wouldn't describe the secret-passages-and-spies plot in The Reluctant Widow as "grim". I think it's one of her funniest and most light-heartedly engaging novels.
