Yeah, all of that stuff is pretty fucked-up, but the thing is, I don't think Heyer actually realized that when she was writing it. This is a problem with a lot of her books, actually. While the events are fucked-up and sort of crazy, her tone is all "la la la performing bears!" Sometimes I end up in a feminist rage about it, or even worse, a rage for some other reason (like the mental illness in Cousin Kate), but in the case of TRW, I'm able to relax and treat it as crack. Think of it like Japanese reality tv, or one of those stories where someone turns into a penguin/belt/lamp/pencil/action figure and nobody bothers to question it.
